When enormous swells pound the California coast, the bravest surfers often grab the spotlight.
But late last week at San Francisco's Ocean Beach, with a building north swell attracting a handful of surfers and scores of spectators, all eyes were on the U.S. Coast Guard.
The accompanying images, used with the permission of Pacifica photographer Dave Rogers, show Coast Guard vessels being maneuvered in harrowing conditions during a series of awe-inspiring training sessions.

Fun fact, at Wisconsin everyone calls all the kids from NY and the East Coast "Coasties", and there's a bit of a rift between them and the Midwestern kids
Nowadays the SJWs would go nuts over this.
What's a Coastie?

What does that have to do with social justice

And if their boat were to sink they could walk back to land.

Midwestern people have almost zero culture

only way to learn to drive in those conditions is to do it, its not something you can learn in a book or talking about it.
its like surfing, you have to learn to feel how the boat acts and maneuvers in the waves

Outrage at categorizing a specific subset by their shared tendencies

Wisconsin has a ton of culture. Illinois, on the other hand...

I was a part of design and testing of those boats

The hard part about steering a sub is accounting for the yaw caused by all the gay sex.

You could say the same for most of Wisconsin as well.

Do tell... were they built in LA? Appear to be aluminum hull, deep V or cat? I take it this is a class of vessel that is above and beyond a 7m-11m RIB, but then again the USCG has aluminum deep V hulled RIBS that are 63 footers.
Used to work for a supplier of RIB collars. It would be cool if it was built by one of my old customers.

That’s the 47 motor life boat. Aluminum Hull, deep v not a cat. Self-righting, but from my buddies that were surfmen, if she had to self-right herself you were lucky if you could limp back in to safe harbor. And you had better hope you had your safety line on or you wouldn’t be limping back in with the boat. Pretty rigorous training process to become a surfman, about two years or so before they would turn you loose to run the boat on your own. Those guys were essentially the seals of boatswain’s mates, kind of an exalted title in the coast guard.

Small town Wisconsin drips in culture wayyyyyy more than rural Illinois.

Ole school 44363 (sister vessel pictured) was lost in ‘97 at the Columbia River bar with the loss of three of the four crewmen.
