Funny thing is they do have the rubber thing connected to the cover. As an old fueler in AF and for Continental and United I've seen them.

They are checking for the arch-enemy of all pilots....

That video is horrifying.

Well... that's part of the reason I do a walk around when I'm flying a small plane. It doesn't take much to frick a flight on a Cessna up. 777 and some of these other guys will have better answers for the bigger planes.

As a pilot, at what point are you sketched out by turbulence? I was on a flight yesterday just in front of that weather and I thought for sure that MD-88 was going down. There were screams and passengers were not talking at all.

I was on a small jet flight that had awful turbulence and hit a hail storm. The highlight was when the gay flight attendant screamed, "Holy Crap!"

We landed, and the next leg of my flight was on the same plane. New crew took over; I was the only passenger who continued on that plane. They said there would be a delay to fix some damage discovered during inspection.

I asked the flight attendant about it, and she said they discovered that a light cover was broken. "I can't imagine how that happened," she said. I replied, "I know exactly how it happened. I was there." I think she thought for a minute that I was insane.

What the hell is a gust lock and what is it's purpose? Never heard of it before and holy shite if that's what happens when you fail to check it.

A gust lock on an aircraft is a mechanism that locks control surfaces and keeps open aircraft doors in place while the aircraft is parked on the ground and non-operational. Gust locks prevent wind from causing unexpected movements of the control surfaces and their linked controls inside the aircraft, as well as aircraft doors on some aircraft. Otherwise wind gusts could cause possible damage to the control surfaces and systems, or nearby people, cargo, or machinery. Some gust locks are external devices attached directly to the aircraft's control surfaces, while others are attached to the flight controls inside the cockpit.

from the comments

quote:

he pilot did a preflight and the controls were not locked........ yet. They found that if the gust controls were not completely opened they could close when the controls were moved and that is what happened. Pilot remains were found around the gust control lock so he knew what had happened but didnt have time to fix it.

quote:

From what I have read, it looks like the engine conversion from radials to turboprops rendered the mechanical safety interlock with the throttles, inoperable. This allowed an unauthorised deployment of the gust lock.

I think I would to prefer to not know what the hell is going on

One of the commenters on that video claimed the controls didn't lock until takeoff and that the pilot did a preflight check.

In this case, I can't comprehend how someone would fail to realize they have this lock engaged. Wouldn't the controls inside be locked as well?

How the frick do all the controls lock on take off? That's like an absolute nightmare scenario that one would think would be designed to be impossible.

Assuming that's true for whatever reason, I wonder when the pilot recognized it because I'd think the first course of action would be to abandon takeoff.

On larger aircraft there is a gust lock lever. It must have been inadvertently engaged during takeoff or shortly after.
