What do they look for other than obvious damage to the aircraft? Are there items they are specifically looking at or looking for?

There are times when they are inspecting landing gear, flaps, etc. and other times I am sure it is just to pass flatulence.

Pre-flight?
That's standard operating procedure.

Making sure the fuel cap is on...they need to get those little rubber bands like cars have now so they don't forget to put it back on.

After that, Captain Kirk made it a point to thoroughly check the Enterprise himself.

Post-arrival SOP with some carriers as well.
On some routes they will also be checking for ice/snow accumulation on wings, fuselage, etc....

Gotta make sure they didn't leave their coffee mug on the roof, too.

There's literally a thousand fasteners, dozens of latches, access panels, instrument sensors on any plane or helo that need to be visually/physically checked, not to mention foreign objects that people leave or drop on the tarmac.

These guys have a checklist they run down before every flight. It's for your safety, and, more importantly, theirs.

depends on the precip, we used to call it the 2-3-6 check on the 727 if it was raining too hard, 2 wings, 3 motors, 6 tires, it's good, also known as the FIFO check---it flew in, it'll fly out
