1. power plug
2. 9v battery power
3. 'hearing aid' battery backup.
i'm just pointing out this doesn't have #3 hence he had to actively POWER IT during class so the alarm would go off.

You have to be doing this on purpose. No way can someone be that stubborn.
9 volt battery backup was a feature when this clock was made in 1986. The battery isn't meant to power the clock, but just keep the time in a power outage. Therefore it still needs to be plugged in to do stuff like beep or show the display.

How bout this... let's say the school and local authorities acted on the possibility that the mechanism the kid brought to school was highly suspicious and felt they were required to investigate and take whatever precautions to keep the other people safe. Let's say that they only took action because of the suspicious item and not the color or name of the kid. Now you will have to agree that is a possibility, otherwise you are stereotyping and not thinking for yourself. You are calling the authorities bullies and racist. Just like other people are. You are saying there is no possible way the authorities acted on the safety of the public but rather they were just racist bigots picking on a kid of middle eastern decent.

The Bill Maher segment on this basically sums up the discussion in this thread. It doesn't look like a fricking "clock". It looks like a bomb and was almost unquestionably brought to school to provoke a reaction. One that the kid received except for the unexpected "windfall" of him also being arrested for what sounds like him being uncooperative with authorities as to why he brought something that looked a bomb to school. Should he have been arrested? Maybe not. We don't know enough of the pertinent facts. However I have seen firsthand, people being arrested for calling in a bomb threat at a school or merely just insinuating that a bomb might be on campus. You HAVE to err on the side of caution in that situation.
It's pretty telling when Bill Maher, Chris Matthews and Mark Cuban, none of which would ever be called "right wing bigots, nutjobs, etc." virtually all agree that the circumstances upon which this incident is based seem very suspicious. The only dissenter in the group was Jorge Ramos who frankly didn't care to hear any of the facts other than that the kid was a muslim.

Except he repeatedly said it was a clock and it was the innards of the clock. There are no accounts of him not putting it away. He took it out much later.
