this message was posted to a personal FB of a news producer in NOLA... so this should be legit.

NEW ORLEANS — Computer systems owned by the city of New Orleans were reportedly targeted by a cyberattack on Friday afternoon.
City personnel, including police and firefighters, were advised to "power off all computers and shutdown cellphones," as dispatchers announced the attack over radio channels.
A spokesperson for the New Orleans Police Department said the cyberattack has not affected the 911 emergency system.
The full extent or type of attack was not immediately known.
"The City of New Orleans is under a cyber attack. Please power off your computers and unplug them immediately. Await further instructions," an internal text message from the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness said.
The city's website, NOLA.gov was unavailable on Friday afternoon.
A ransomware attack hit several Louisiana state government computers last month. The state quickly shut down network traffic to prevent the spread, and have brought most state offices back online since. The ransomware attack damaged 10% of Louisiana’s computer servers for state government. But officials say no data was lost and no ransom was paid.

Eh, Baton Rouge was hit a few weeks ago.
This is going to get more and more pronounced in the near future, which is why I moved my concentration in CIS to Cyber Security
In the past year these attacks have increased 100 fold

In other news property crimes are up 63%...
but murders are down
332 shootings in 2018, compared to 331 in 2019.
So I guess thats a wash
Progress

I’m sure NOLA city govt saves a backup atleast every day. Everything will be fine.

I’m assuming this is the same attack that hit the state a few weeks ago and a few other cities.

We still have 2 1/2 weeks to overlap this number. I fully expect to that number and then a little extra

A former classmate of mine was consulting with the city regarding their data connectivity years back. He asked the CIO how they connected to the internet and was told "through the e"
He said the "e"?
The CIO turned their monitor around and clicked on the icon for Internet Explorer.

those numbers should be in reality way higher than they are
NOPD only reports shootings and break ins as one incident...when in reality there could be numerous shootings and/break ins at one particular location.
