Looks like the city wants their piece of the pie too. Helena says if you want to ride, pony up 25 more bucks. Funny it took this long for them to try this.

Typical, go after the groups that generate the most tourism money for you.

Terrible article. Krewe Captain and some university political analyst saying it’s happening. Then an unnamed person from the city saying they don’t know about it. Sounds like they are reporting on a rumor.

quote:

The city said it was not part of that meeting and has not confirmed it is considering a fee.

How would this be collected? So many questions.

According to AI, Endymion has 3,200 riders. So this fee would only generate $80K from what is probably the largest krewe. Expect a higher initial fee and double-digit annual Mardi Gras Fee inflation thereafter.

I wonder if 25 dollars is going to scare or impede any of these riders.

Heck I could even see other jurisdictions implementing a fee like this.

The government shouldn’t be subsidizing a private organization’s parade down the street.

The cost should be more. The city should tabulate the overtime and trash pickup costs and hand the bill to each Krewe parading down the street. Krewes should also be responsible for their own facility fees, rental equipment, and food expenses at Gallire Hall.

One thing that these fees may do is eliminate some smaller krewes that shouldn’t be individual krewes to begin with. I find there are way too many krewes leading to way too many parade nights.

Heck in Terrebonne Parish, Krewes wanted to continue to receive sweetheart deals to rent the civic center for Krewe tableaus and other parties. The parish had enough and changed the rates.

I’m not sure if I’ve seen a dumber or to be nice a more uninformed take on a subject.
I don’t even know where to start.
You do realize how much tax revenue is raised during Mardi Gras? Of which the parades are overall the main draw all season long?
You can start with just that, and it would justify rejecting further taxing the parade participants.
You do know that everything that goes into that parade has been bought and paid for including taxes for every little thing that is on that float from the throes to the alcohol and king cakes consumed on the parade route and now they want to tax the riders simply for breathing the air - the piss and puke scented air of a parade route.

Don’t give these communist motherfrickers another goddamn dime.

This has always been an issue of contention. Yes, Mardi Gras draws a lot of visitors and attention to the city and generates tax revenue, but my point is that I do not believe that this tax extra revenue is enough to cover all the extra expenses that a city spends on these events especially when there is a parade nearly every night beginning 2 weeks before Mardi Gras.

I did do a quick search and evidently police details for parades and sanitation services are billed to the krewes, but I gather last year they did not collect enough to cover some of this leading to last year’s shortfall.

Not the other way around. If you want to go that path, then organizations impact on tax revenue and jobs created have to be considered. Also, the value added to the “brand” of the city post-Mardi Gras. And so on.

It all becomes some subjective models and we are back to square one.

I thought that's what parade permits are for....

Endymion pays for most of the extra police that comes in, like JPSO, during the parade. They need to tell the city to pound sand...

Can't swing an extra $25? You shouldn't be riding in the first place.

If Mardi Gras was a new concept being proposed to the city with the current financial impact, these Krewes would be paid significantly to put on the parades.

They wouldn’t be charged fees. They would be paid money by the city.

Where does it stop? That would be my issue. Every year or two they'll come back for more.

Have you ever considered, that New Orleans doesn't have a revenue problem, but a spending problem? Taxing something that brings in millions in tourism revenue is biting the hand that feeds you. And of course, liberals are ok with more taxes but won't dare mention that maybe NO should just stop spending so much on waste.

At one point I’m sure it was.

But now we to bring in extra police and put them up. We have more parades which are lasting longer. More items purchased outside city so no sales tax.

Meanwhile more and more Krewe captains / adult marching group owners are making money off of parading,
