Then what is the point of having the law?
For crimes that aren't as egregious on their own as this one. Say for instance, burning a cross in someone's yard. That is just vandalism on its own, but hate crime laws allow for further punishment.

I think the symbolism and a possible federal conclusion that these acts are not tolerated by THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, meaning all of us, is valuable and shouldn't be avoid. If anything, it's an act of solidarity. That point needs to be hit home, just as we let terrorist aboard know that acts on our country won't be tolerated either
I think everyone, without this being investigated as a "hate crime", agrees these acts are not tolerated. There is solidarity. Also, everyone knows he did this out of hate and racism, no need to spend money to prove something we already know to get the same punishment he'd get otherwise.

The prosecutors will also be pressured to consider charges of terrorism, as a political official was targeted and murdered.
Max penalty for terrorism is death penalty, as well.
this is about as close as it gets to domestic terrorism

Couldn't tune in. What was said?
Cliffs: Gov. Haley basically thanked everyone, was proud of everyone throughout the state, then got choked up when saying that the heart and soul of SC was broken with this event.

Yes, if it is what it appears to be, it's definitely terrorism.

what if he pleads to 1st degree murder in South Carolina court? why would we need the federal investigation/prosecution
it's a waste of resources and this is better left to the State where the crime occurred to seek its punishment

i think it's a silly law that shouldn't exist and this scenario shows why it's just absurd and should be removed

Would be totally fine with him being charged as a terrorist.

Shelby, NC is 3-4 hours away from Charleston but he was caught about 14 hours after the crime. What did he do during that time?

I don't think that necessarily makes him mentally ill
I think he just really hates black people
Hating an entire group of people based on the melanin content of their skin sounds pretty nuts to me.

One thing he didn't do was have a plan to dump his getaway car. So not only is he a racist murderer he is dumb as a stump.

i think there is a large overlap between the 2 concepts

I'd be okay with a public stoning or hanging for him. Instead he'll probably sit in prison for 20 years while the courts figure out what he's guilty of
