horse shite, it is a fricking thought crime that can't be determined except by reading tea leaves (unless the perp says so) and it is highly susceptible to selective enforcement, which is the favorite tool of tyrants, always has been

All crimes are hate crimes, baw. Trying to discern a person's heart, in order to make certain crimes "more criminal" is silly and counterproductive. Ultimately, all they do is reinforce the notion that blacks are different, inferior and need "special" protection.
I don't care why he did it - he broke society's compact sufficiently to warrant his own death - or life imprisonment if that is the jury's decision.
I see it as a measure we set in place to recognize that we are get to our past mistakes right. We have decided that our racial/ethnic/cultural/gender injustices, in such a heterogenous society, were our biggest sins. Min think it's a good measure to show at least that we do not tolerate those acts, especially considering our claims and ideals of equality and freedom for all.

Arrest and prison is too good for this a-hole.
Well now that he has been caught I hope everyone has their big boy pants on and buckled up because this SOB just handed the statists a gift wrapped excuse to go after gun control and expunge the Confederate flag from the entire national consciousness.
I don't really care about the flag but outlawing unpopular symbols is a slippery slope toward restricting free speech. Guns on the other hand - over my dead body as they say.

Governor is in tears in her press conference.

Frankly it is largely pandering to black special interests.

symbolism
Never pays the bills and never solves any problems. Although I respect the point you're trying to make - to a certain degree.

these acts
You see, murder is already illegal in South Carolina and they reserve the highest possible punishment for it.

That point needs to be hit home
Him getting the death penalty under state law would hit that point pretty solid - like a McGwire/Bonds, steroid-fueled, 540-foot homer.

Nikki Haley just found a way to make this political. Smooth move.

Yikes.

Pure garbage.

hate crimes are per-se First Amendment violations. The motivation for committing a crime is already factored into the mens rea element of the crime. So adding a separate punishment and "crime" for the motivation is punishing bad thoughts.

There is no point.

And state law death penalty is some sort of mistake for this particular defendant (if convicted)?

We have decided that our racial/ethnic/cultural/gender injustices, in such a heterogenous society, were our biggest sins.
I don't think we decided that. And if we did, all the sinners are long since dead - the last slave owner was dead before the 1960s civil rights movement.

we do not tolerate those acts
South Carolina tolerates murder in 2015?

equality and freedom for all.
Unless you hate. Then, "frick you," right? (Americans should have the right to hate, period.)
I assume then, you would advocate punishing for hateful thoughts, while excusing a person who does a bunch of fricked up stuff to a bunch of innocent people, but with good intentions, right?

The prosecutors will also be pressured to consider charges of terrorism, as a political official was targeted and murdered.
Max penalty for terrorism is death penalty, as well.

Overall it was a good emotional statement. But slipping in the political language was pretty weak.
Also, GFY.

What political language? Saying that presidential candidates have handled this well? This state is crawling with presidential candidates right now on both sides. The state senator who was killed had campaigned with Hillary. They all took a step away while this was happening. She was thanking them.
