Most mass murders have some sort of mental health issue or disdain towards an entity (church, government, etc)
They always have a purpose and reason for doing it other than "That dude disrespected me" or "He's on my corner". They do it because of deep seeded mental issues (Lanza) or hate (McVeigh).
In their minds the justification is rooted in an altered reality.
Case in point: Lanza wanted to punish his bullies at the Elementary school. He believed his bullies were still at that school.

I find it hard to believe there were only 13 mass killings pre 1950 with all those lynchings and shite that took place. That shite happened everyday in America.

Rampage killings refer to a certain number of dead (around 6) or a certain number of dead plus wounded.
I don't think lynchings would fall under the technical definition of rampage killing.
