. Kind of a core tenant of my agnosticism. I don’t know what’s right, so therefor I remain on the sidelines. People who are Christians “just in case” are a big thing that turns me off of the church.

I don’t judge nor truly care what others believe, just be a good person and that should be enough in my mind.

Think about that. People can twist the most heinous acts as somehow being good and what moral authority does anyone else have to say it’s wrong if there is no supreme moral authority (God).

Someone has to be very fricked up in the head if the only thing preventing them from doing bad shite is the idea that god will send them to hell if they give in to their desires.

To add to that, there are religions telling people that god wants them to suicide bomb a store and they will receive 30 virgins. People will find a way to justify their actions with or without god. Belief in god =/= good morals.

Now that church isn't cool anymore, myself and the other contrarians can finally start attending.

It's not to say that most people won't be basically good without a religious belief, but rather how can you condemn something under moral relativism?

Religion and faith will disappear in the western world, just like it did in Roman times and throughout history. It will return after a period of civil restoration and revival which could take 100 years. We are reliving history and going through the process yet again. The only thing that stops this is extinction.

I think a lot of this is due to all of the scummy lying TV evangelists and the Catholic Church sex offender scandals. Also a lot of the leaders of the protestant churches in the South are very judgemental and unaccepting, and most Southern preachers live pretty lavish lives outside of Church(Enjoying that tithe money$$). I know a few preachers in my hometown that are involved in multiple affairs.

I'm a believer and I pray regularly...but I think a lot of people are like me and aren't buying into the bs lies anymore. You don't need Church for salvation.

A lot of people don’t join a church by “transfer of letter” or by “statement” (using the old Baptist terminology). They show up on Sunday. Although I probably agree with the numbers.

I found out just last week that as Catholics, my parents had to get an approval letter from the Priest in the Parish they just moved into to be a member of an out of Parish church that my nieces attend? Why?

I don’t know that I explained that very well. Why does a Catholic have to have a letter from on Priest to be a member of another Church?

I think a common argument is that if their is no religious backing, what is there to fear. But those who don’t believe in god aren’t completely unaware of the teachings of religions and its impacts to social norms. If an atheist was completely unaware of Christianity and how it’s molded society, then yes, that would raise questions in regards to how they could see certain actions as good or bad. But that’s never the case. We have laws and societal norms that have been molded by religion. A personal belief in god doesn’t change those norms our society has.

And again, you have people who don’t believe in god who are shits. Just like you have catholic priest diddling kids. People will always find a way to justify their actions, regardless of religious and societal norms.

Never heard of that before. Most of the people left in my church aren’t even in the directories we used to have

I think it's similar, but without the boy scout type activities and sports that RA's used to do.

Throughout human history, either religion or ethnic identity has been the binding agent of society or its subgroups. What exactly is our shared interest without either? Vapid consumerism? I really do struggle to understand what can create effective communities without some kind of tangible bond.

And many people choose to ignore biblical laws because they would rather do whatever they want and not think about the consequences.

Let’s not muddy the waters by lumping all religions together. I agree with you 100% on people justifying their actions with or without God though. The Bible warns about that over and over again.

Likely signifies the end of the US as we know it. There is no reason to follow the Ten Commandments and all the laws that are based on them if we don't believe that stuff. You know, take many wives, sex with anyone any age and so on. The strong survive. God may need to show himself sooner or later.

Is that a large number? How many people do you know that fall into that category?
