I was going to stay out of this one till this was stated: no it didn’t.
The conspiracy theorists latched on this because of a paper saying so due to similarities to HIV.
The paper was rescinded because once the community applied the same parameters in a broad BLAST source they found the same connection to HIV.....and thousands of other viruses, including the relatives of this virus.
If that lab is involved, it is because of poor containment controls, either from an active outbreak in rural areas brought in to study or a natural virus brought in from an animal reservoir.
There isn’t a shred of actual evidence indicating an engineered or modified virus, and the only people saying otherwise are those speaking dramatically in YouTube vids with at most just support for disparate facts that they link together and expect you to accept.

It’s very very possible as it’s wierd as hell. There was a story early on that they were creating virus to test their ability to wipe them out, etc. The labs there are not at the level that should be fricking around with such things so it’s always been a strong possibly.
