Chinese umbrella sharing company loses 300,000 umbrellas in 3 months

That's a bold strategy

E Umbrella had an investment of 10 million yuan (approximately $1.47 million USD) when it launched in April, and charged customers 19 yuan ($2.90 USD) per umbrella deposit and an additional half yuan ($0.07 USD) per 30 minutes. Stands were typically scattered across the cities near train and bus stations (some of which were outside... in the rain?) and users receive a code to unlock the umbrella after paying for it on an app. However, the startup apparently didn’t provide enough information on how customers can return the umbrellas when they’re done

The founder discloses that an umbrella costs the company 60 yuan ($8.82 USD) each to replace, but despite the losses he plans to add 30 million more available across China by the end of the year.

Mitch has an RFP out to do this with bicycles in New Orleans.
What could go wrong?

I have a friend that has a successful bike rental company in the Quarter. He is livid about this proposal. The planned proposal has the city placing a bicycle stand directly in front of his business.

I mean. Divvy works great in chicago. Cause if you don't return the bike within a certain amount of time (a couple of days I think) you get charged $2000 dollars.
One of the few things Chicago has designed well.

Chattanooga has this. It works really well. I don't use them but a lot of people do. You can't rent unless you have a credit card. They have stands all over downtown Chattanooga.
That said, Chattanooga isn't New Orleans.

Math seems shady. Can't believe they are paying $8.82 per umbrella, but 8.82 X 300,000 sounds like a $2.65M mistake...

Comparable to the bicycles and bicycle stands scattered all over Manhattan in NYC.

If you think culcha would steal a gas powered rebar saw just to steal bikes, you're right on target

I was thinking the same thing. So umbrellas cost $8.82 in China, but when it rains in Manhattan, you can buy an umbrella on the street for $5.... and it was made in China.

Ummm, bike share is now all over globe. Some systems, especially the early ones, have failed and/or lost money, but many have turned a profit.
Definitely hard to see how umbrellas would do the same.

For the bicycles you put down a credit card. If the bike is not returned they charge your card for the bike.

Tell him to scout out Dallas/FW if he is so concerned, and see the business model used here.
A number of bike rental/service places opened along routes of a city sponsored rental trail.
Uses the higher traffic of their targeted demographic to boost walk ins.
Granted, it is along a very long and popular urban work out trail along the Trinity.
Don't bitch, adapt to marginalize the downside.

It's low-key but it's changed a lot on the past 10 years. There's a young, white crowd on the south side and in north chatt. A lot of good looking white girls here

Lexington did bicycle sharing downtown. After 2 months the bicycles were all gone.
