But tell ne how central socialist planning works.

quote:

Over the past two decades, the twin engines of “urbanization” and “land finance” have pushed local governments to build vast new districts in the hopes of attracting investment and residents. Yet surveys and media investigations show that China now has at least 50 ghost cities—fully built urban centers with roads, high-rises, and public facilities but hardly any residents.

These districts feature immaculate infrastructure, expansive boulevards, and even airports and metro lines, but after dark, they fall almost completely silent.

quote:

Among them, Xiong’an New Area stands out. Announced in 2017 with enormous political fanfare, Xiong’an was billed as a “millennium plan” and meant to absorb Beijing’s non-capital functions. The government announced an investment target equivalent to US$85 billion, describing the project as China’s next great urban experiment.

Eight years later, official reports still insist the area is booming—state enterprises are moving in, population is rising, and schools, hospitals, and housing are “taking shape.”

But recent visits by independent observers paint a sharply different picture that contrasts starkly with the official narrative.

One visitor filmed his walk through Xiong’an and described the experience as “post-apocalyptic”: “If you want to know what a world without people looks like, come here. This is it.”

He noted the contradiction—meticulous landscaping, spotless streets, and gleaming new towers, yet no sign of human life.

“You look up at an entire block of high-rises and see two windows lit. Everything else is black. It’s beautiful but tragic.”

The emptiness reminded him of the Hollywood film I Am Legend: “Honestly, this place could be a tourist attraction. I’m not joking.”

He wondered what it must feel like to work in these vast, vacant towers: “Imagine going to the office knowing that every floor from bottom to top is empty.”

But if it were it wouldn't be.

Such is life.

I'll take this with a grain of salt. Ghost towns don't look immaculate for very long.

Can they have a real estate crash? I thought the provincial governments backed all of this, and took on the debt to mask the debt load at the federal level.

I saw this in Korea too. Mega buildings with four apartments that had lights on at night.

This has less to do with central socialist planning and more to do with population collapse due to low birth rates. Also, since investment opportunities are limited in China, everyone invested in housing, thinking that it would continue to appreciate. Unfortunately, it was a flawed economic model that was allowed primarily to keep Chinese workers occupied and getting paid instead of revolting. Now that the construction sector is collapsing, Chinese unemployment is on the rise and the CCP is going to have to pay the fiddler.

I don't know. I could probably enjoy living in an immaculate new city that doesn't have a bunch of other frickers in it.

You’re going to have a hard time arguing that what China is doing isn’t “working”

But aren’t the low birth rates due to central socialist planning? You know, the whole “one child” policy?

Most arent meant to be actually lived in...Just investments and a finished apt is going to damage your selling price.

When I was a kid we would play wiffle ball in the back yard with ghost men. Maybe that's where they live.

As a DTM stage 4/5 country, China's population is beginning to age and contract. By 2100, their population is projected to be half what it is now. More and more of these "ghost" cities will appear.

No. Put the migrants in one (and only one) city and come back after a decade to see how thriving it is, how clean it is and how well maintained the infrastructure is.

Further immigration would be based on the results.
