China Is No Longer the USA's Top Trading Partner

Per Axios
quote:
Mexico supplanted China this year as the United States' top trading partner.
Trade with China started declining after the Trump administration imposed restrictive tariffs on Chinese imports in 2018 — and China responded with retaliatory tariffs.
The Biden administration left those tariffs in place. Today, the average U.S. tariff on Chinese imports is 19.3%

Assume this is due in great part to Fentanyl and Illegals

This is something people should continue to get behind. The more production in Mexico the less likely illegals will come here for “opportunity.”

Or maybe China is shipping through Mexico.

Raise tariffs on China to lessen access to their #1 consumer. Renegotiate NAFTA so the trade deal was more accommodating for American industry to utilize both Mexico and the US for joint manufacturing. Weakens China, and in theory makes Mexico stronger to hopefully reduce illegal immigration. It truly is a win-win.

Sounds good, but I’d like to see a wage/cost of living comparison between Mexican and American workers to see if that “opportunity” has truly been diminished.

Shipping, hell they are manufacturing/assembling with Chinese nationals in industrial parks.

So, they don’t have to go to China for their IPs to be stolen then?

Mexico may be getting its act together but Central America is still a fricking mess. Most illegals coming through these days are from Honduras, Guatemala, and Nicaragua. Hell, people from all over the world are likely coming unchecked through our southern border.

Or maybe China shut its economy down for two years and some of those supply chains are never coming back.

The people flowing through the border aren't really Mexicans anymore, and yes, it's b/c of the SOL increasing in Mexico due to trade deals.
We need to expand this policy into Central America and THEN the flow of illegal immigration from the South will subside.

I’d rather import stuff from Mexico than China. However, how about making more of our stuff in the USA. Most of it’s done by robotics anyway.
