It is not just child marriage. A lot of marriages involving minors are forced. The UK has an organization called Karma Nirvana that tries to help young girls who are being forced into marriage.
In UK these are almost always Islamic etc., NOT British heritage

And it is legal in the large majority of states for a sixty-year-old (yes, 6-0) dude to do it with an under-eighteen-year-old girl. So in many states, a sixteen- or seventeen-year-old can legally have sex (and thereby potentially have a kid) with an adult or get married, but not open a checking account. But the momentum for reform of these laws seems to be lacking.

My grandfather as a kid in the 30s lived in a one room house with a dirt floor in Missouri.
The 20s really kicked off modern society in the larger cities but rural areas weren’t much better off than they were in 1830

Hell even in the 70s getting married as a teenager was common.
I know some people whose daughter was engaged at 16 and they couldn't have been happier. I mean WTF?

I used to live in an apartment complex that was full of Indian H1B tech workers and their families. One day I was walking past the man-made pond and gazebo and saw two 11 year old Indian children being betrothed in some sort of arranged wedding ceremony complete with ornate costumes and all kinds of weird shite. I later asked someone about this and they said it was a ceremonial joining of the two houses and the kids would not sleep in the same bed until they were 18. I was like what is this, Game of Thrones?

I swear most cases I am aware of are tied to Travelers.
Not to say it doesn’t happen outside of that but there are all kinds of stories about marriage deals made in those communities which involve kids being married either to each other or to an older person.

Well this would be bait for Phantom Menace, if he was not banned
Mary (The Mother of Jesus) was between 12-16 years old at his birth. Joseph was between 18-54 years old.
History is so very different than what we accept today. Nobody should get married in their teens though, live your life for a bit.

letting kids marry other kids is dumb.
signing off on your child marrying an adult should be considered child abuse.

Old country shite.
I used to hear stories in the 80s and 90s of some Indian girls I went to school with who had family in the old country.
I believe one had an arranged marriage that didn’t go through and seeing the prospective spouse was part of why they would travel back to India and take trains and busses to Bumfrick. Lucky for him it didn’t go through because if he thought he was getting a sweet, demure housewife he would have been sorely mistaken.

Travelers are effectively gypsies, just not in the traditional Roma sense.

17 year olds from any era have the exact same underdeveloped prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for risk/reward analysis and long term planning.

The "Travelers" from South Carolina are basically a grifter gypsy society that does this by selling child brides to highest bidders.

Historically you needed larger families to work the land and to compensate for higher infant mortality rate and the shorter average lifespan. I try not to apply modern notions on bygone practices.
However, in today's world I can't think of a reason for defending this practice. There's a family that lives in close proximity to us that practices a form of Pentacostalism and their 14 year old daughter us already "betrothed" to a mid-20s guy. It's pretty sick.
Almost as sick... when we moved in they brought us gluten-free, sugar-free cookies. What kind of sicko would do such a thing.

I've watched enough TLC gypsy shows to know what kind of white trash those people are. I wish those shows would come back.

My best friend his mom was 15 and dad was 16 when they married. It is more uncommon today ,but not as uncommon as you'd think. Though that may not be an example that would apply here depending on what you consider a child.

As for today, there is no valid reason for a gown man to have any interest in a teenage girl.

has nothing to do with star wars.
it was actually an episode of new amsterdam. where the doctors went all out to save the groom but, questioned whether they should have after they found out he was marrying little kid.
ETA: the point of the thread really isn't about the show but, the fact that i didn't realize it was actually legal.
