Internets doesn't separate the places you actually would live in Chicago though

Difference being that with SS everyone pays in and everyone (theoretically) benefits. Unlike the public pensions...everyone pays in and a few benefit (and it bankrupts entire cities and states in the process).

I wouldn't teach in the Chicago public schools for twice that amount.

Not sure where you got that information, but I contribute almost 10% into TRSL...

ETA: 9.19% to be exact.

CPS picks up 7% of the 9% (through pension pick up compensation) per the CTU website.

Edit: it looks like new teachers might no longer get that benefit. I missed that

Arkansas teacher here but I contribute 8% of my gross and school board matches another 6%. I personally decided that quality of life is much better living in a rural area making substantially less money. I don't knock my pay, I knew what I was getting into. That said I teach physics and AP bio, have a STEM BS with an education masters and drive a bus all for the rich payday of 48K a year. You aren't getting a lot of qualified candidates trying to take my spot. I spent years in medicine and some time in corporate and will say I had it much easier then than I do now.

We do need to eliminate all public pensions. It was fine when the public sector was behind the private sector in pay, but that is no longer the case, and it's unsustainable for the long term.

With a ridiculous retirement benefit that (in part) bankrupts municipalities. The unfunded liabilities (not just teachers) are absurd. But perhaps they need increased medical benefits for the all the pulled muscles as a result of superfluous self-back patting

The American dream people. Don’t have a life to enjoy but hey, at least your wife that’s getting plowed by Jody when you’re slaving away is driving that new Denali.

You don't math very well.. Teachers are paid on 9 month contracts.

His math is terrible, but teachers can and do get a summer job for incremental income and to prevent them from dying of boredom.

Obviously us full timers don't really do that.

Eh, there are plenty of perfectly fine places in the city where one can live on $50 - 60K/year. You won’t be living large, but it’s a perfectly good life. Chicago isn’t like NYC or San Francisco in that sense. Plenty of middle class and lower-middle class areas that are safe. I wouldn’t try to have kids on that salary, though (and only very junior teachers are anywhere near that range, anyway).

But frick the CTU. God I hate them. This will be their 3rd time striking or very nearly so in 7 years. Greedy bastards are bankrupting the city and state.

Welcome to the real world, pal. Over my 20 year career in technology, I've averaged over 60 hours a week, and very seldom take all of my alotted annual vacation. I'm not paid for those extra hours, and neither is anyone else here that has a salaried position. So no, it doesn't "even out" as you stated. I'm definitely coin-operated, and "in it for the money", and those sacrifices have lead to significant career advancement. That's how things work in the private sector.

Work to Live, not the other way around. There's no guarantee you're going to make it to retirement or the age at which you can start to enjoy your "advancement".
