How does this work in places that have state-owned ABC stores? Is the service and selection terrible?

I've never been to one.

It's fine. Not great selection at some locations and the pricing perhaps isn't as good as other places.

Not sure this would be an apples to apples comparison though.

Let's take that a step further. Most residents of "food deserts" are on food stamps / WIC. Let's just go back to the days of government cheese and cereal.

I mean I understood the value prop to having the local community grocers get to profit from the transaction but with theft and destitution in many of these markets killing off food access altogether it’s a liquor/convenience store or nothing so I agree just let them show up at a distribution center to reduce costs and theft and move on.

I don't know why they would even call this a store. It would basically be a place where people just come to steal goods paid for by taxpayers

Hey! That way they never lose money!

So what is the government going to do when people come and shoplift the frick out of these stores?

Nothing. P/L doesn't matter to them since it's our money they're losing.

A corporation who knows a lot about running a business cannot make a profit, so the government thinks it's a good idea to take over. I love it.

This is a great example of how free market capitalism cannot and will not work when crime is allowed to go unpunished. Hell, they're even encouraging it. California is headed in the same direction. If you can't earn a profit there is no need to be in business.

BTW, the state of Utah - a red state? - owns all of its liquor stores. Government gets the profits. Guess who pays more for their alcohol than nearby states?

North Carolina is like that too and we have some ABC stores down here in S Carolina as well.

It's less driven by some equity bullshite and more the more conservative values meant the elected officials there wanted more control over the sales of these "vice" products.

Non govt owned stores work all over the world, they work in other parts of Illinois, why don’t they work in parts of Chicago? Perhaps the answer to both my question and yours is the same..

This way, the people can steal endlessly and the government can simply absorb the losses

Yes, Utah's is driven by the Mormon Church controlling virtually everything in that state - trying to impose their beliefs on every one else. And then the Mormon politicians who control these laws get to benefit by making profit for the state. That's just wrong.

They should add a McDonald's fight club, barber shop, and funeral home in the basement.

Entitlement. Something the homogeneous population of Russia doesn't have.

You have a point there.

Yea, because socialism has worked so well wherever it has been implemented.
Hot take: when thugs are allowed to steal with impunity, it's not a good environment of business in general.

The takeaway for me is that not only does communism suck but also the Government will never be as good at solving problems as capitalism. This post was edited on 9/18 at 9:01 am

Then you would just have people stealing other people’s already paid for groceries, probably violently in some cases.

Addicts already steal and sell their groceries, my focus is just on getting them to the recipient. No grocery store or distribution center can fix crime and addiction in the community.
