IMO, this is the downfall of American society.
Our obsession with actors and musicians is severely detrimental to a society, since those people do not provide anything productive to the world, coupled with the fact that Hollywood, etc has been taken over by heathens.

They start at a young age. Taylor Swift has been around for like 15 years and was a massive country/pop star amongst young people. She’s the female version of Justin Bieber.

I don't think I'll ever understand the genuine obsession with a musician/actor/celebrity.
One slight caveat - when we were in our early 30s, my wife and I got really into the Beatles. We were on a trip to Liverpool and did a bunch of Beatles stuff and had read some books prior to the trip, etc. We weren't superfans or anything, but there was enough of a history/subculture there to dig into that I found substantive/interesting and I spent a couple of years with The Beatles being one of my favorite topics to watch documentaries on, read about, etc. The Beatles were big enough and impactful enough that they generated a lot of "scholarship" and thus a lot of material to dig into.
So I can see it for something like that where it transcends just being a fan and starts to reflect on the culture generally, or helps define a period of time, etc. But I'm just not seeing how Swift etc. is likely to do so, and I certainly don't think there is enough out there at the moment to make it interesting enough to have "Taylor Swift" as one of your top 5 interests/hobbies in life. Admittedly probably some negative recency bias there.

This is nothing new. People are no more obsessed with Taylor Swift than they were Elvis or the Beatles.

I'll go through my love of Taylor Swift as an example, and yall can downvote away.
For me, it's this. I'm 3 years older, so being around the same age her music is relatable to me. Her music isn't all what you hear on the radio, it's matured as she has grown. She is very very good at writing lyrics that paint and picture and tell a story. Ive never been good at expressing emotions, so I can always find a song in her catalog 240+ song that relates to what Im feeling.
Ive always been just a fan. I kinda ramped it up more than normal the last year and a half following the Eras tour after I went in Atlanta. But I also went through a really shitty time in my life so it brought me consistent happiness at a time when I was really struggling. May sound silly but it helped tremendously.
So now I'm in an amazing place in my life and I'm sooooo excited to go see her concert again this weekend in person instead of on a shitty live stream again after she brought me so much happiness.

Honestly, when the Saints won it all i knew I had reached Olympus. No topping that so I pretty much stopped caring at that point. That season will never be topped.
