We need to have common sense Social Media control. There is no reason someone under the age of 21 should have any sort of social media when it’s obvious it is so destructive. The founders only had pen and paper in mind when they wrote the first amendment so why do people think it applies to new technologies? If it saves just one life from suicide we need to do the right thing here.

LuckyTiger you nailed this 1000%. The previous posts about social media are tied directly to this. Many have an innate need for acceptance and platforms such as Facebook , Instagram and Twitter give them the means to search for this acceptance by developing online personas that are not real. When this eventually fails and it always will fail what are they left with. Start this destructive cycle with a preteen and you end up with the OP’a link to the article. Really sad to see this occur.

You do realize Ben Shapiro graduated summa cum laude from UCLA at 20 years old and then cum laude at Harvard Law at 23 right? He’s legitimately smarter than 100% of this board. You have any reason why the suicide rates are skyrocketing? Because he dove into a few reasons typically given and showed that they were wrong.

Facebook was taking off in 2005. I've always thought it would do more harm than good.
Back in the 80's and 90's there was school time, and then home time. Now kids are constantly engaged via social media. No bueno.

I think most people here are smart enough to realize this is an opinion piece by The Blaze, an unappologetically Christian-based site, and discern that the CDC is not pushing religion. And also discern that he religious comments are, in fact, opinion pieces by the author.
The people speaking about getting closer to God in this thread are expressing their opinions and, again, I think people can see that.

It’s not a Blaze article, it’s a Daily Wire article. The write up also cites the reasoning behind this from a study in the Psychological Sciences. I know it’s an opinion piece, but it holds its weight in my opinion.

I recently started theorizing that we have stopped teaching children how to "blame themselves" in healthy, productive ways. We've listened to far too much bullshite pop psychobabble that says "blaming yourself" is destructive to your self-esteem and positive self-image.
No it's not. It is a critical human skill to be able to recognize that you screwed up, get back on the horse, reflect, and figure out how to do better.
All this helicopter parenting and trying to blame everyone else but the kid effectively eliminates the opportunity for kids to learn themselves how to deal with adversity.
They don't know how to deal with it in a healthy fashion, so it tears them up inside. Unfortunately, they perceive the only way out is to end their life.
I think social media is also playing a big role. It used to be that if you did something stupid/embarrassing then maybe you got razzed by a dozen people. Now embarrassing shite can be broadcast for everyone to see. Teens already place inordinate amounts of value on "fitting in" and "being cool." If they perceive that they have blown their chance to fit in, they don't see life as worth living anymore.
Very sad all around.

Kids mistake social media and internet relationships as true relationships and friendships when they are not. They lack social skills and have few real friends to turn to when life gets them down.
