He analyzed data then supposed that lack of religion is the cause through an unapologetic religious lens.

The idea that value of life and morality can only be found through religion actually offends me as an intelligent human being.

There are tons of other prevailing ideas about rise in suicide. Lack of two-parent households, proliferation of social media and through that the desire for instant gratification in all things.

He just thinks its religion and you say his law degree from Harvard make him a trusted source because he's smart. There are a lot of people with law degrees from Harvard that I promise you wouldn't hold in the same light because their opinions defer from your own.

Kids aren't being taught to take a deep breath and move forward. I know it's a lot harder now to ignore gossip and bullying with FB and other social media. But if there is one thing I preach preach preach to my sons, is to RELAX, take a deep breath, it's not that big of a deal.

Kids just don't know how to deal with adversity anymore. The ones who do, and move forward are told to check their privilege.

Everyone does embarrassing and stupid things so when people do, it’s ok to laugh at yourself and realize that people are gonna laugh at you cause it’s pretty funny for others to see that sort of stuff.
Right. That's how it was when we grew up. Do something embarrassing, get made fun of by who saw it, and move on with your life

Now, you do something embarrassing, someone filmed it, it gets posted online, and you relive that moment over an over with sometimes thousands of people, adults included, who berate and destroy you

People on this board like to simply call the kids pussies, but they deal with shite that blows and we didn't have to

the social media thing is the key, period.

was talking to a very attractive college gal last night. she posted some bikini pic that had 700+ likes. I said something about wow that's a ton, you must be proud. she legit got a dejected look on her face and said "well for my college that's not many at all, 2000+ is a lot for a hot girl".

Kids also have a ton of high expectations placed on them. They feel the need to be #1 at everything or they're a failure. Only seeing the good parts of peoples lives on social media only intensifies it.

Social media sucks. And yes, I'm on social media. I just haven't been man enough to disconnect from it.

I was watching the Today Show this morning and Netflix has put a disclaimer out for their anti-bullying show that was meant to prevent teen suicide is actually causing teen suicides.

I think a lack of spirituality, interconnectedness has a lot to do with it. Not religion

Also raising kids with few challenges in life, rigid expectations for an occupation, getting away from the outdoors and nature and muting the natural masculinity and femininity people have.

It's part of it.

Kids growing up with no real passion for anything is another.

Back in the 80's and 90's there was school time, and then home time. Now kids are constantly engaged via social media. No bueno.

I think this is a big part of it, more than specifically social media.

You never turn off. If it's 3am and you wake up in the middle of the night, there's an entire world out there that you can plug into - obsessing about social media, maybe, or watching unhealthy amounts of fricked up porn or reading police reports about murdered teens or getting on some Roast Me website where you can bully or be humiliated to your heart's content.

Most of the people I know with major depression issues (myself included) come from fricked up homes with parents who were incredibly distant from the physical and emotional needs of their children.

I definitely lean on this side of the causal fence. One of the best ways I found to deal with stress, a bad day, needing to get my thoughts straight, etc. was to go on a hike for at least a few hours...if not an entire day. Get away from people, away from all the shite that was bothering me.

Still works every time.

Then again, I hate people so your mileage may vary

Kids spend considerably less time outdoors than their parents, who spent less than their parents

Parents also aren't spending as much time engaging with their kids as people did in the past.

Social media sets up major unlikely expectations as well which aren't challenged by parents.

I sit outside and take photos of birds.

It is wonderful.

Same here. I've got a few places I go with my camera that melt the stress away

There was an article a few weeks back that points out that this trend in increasing suicides correlates with the introduction of the smart phone

I read that article. They were saying the inability of kids to get away from their bullies, and constantly seeing the things they are missing out on socially drove them to depression.

The constant inundation of stimulus is too much to handle for their developing brains.
