Does depression exist in Third World countries?
Posted on 3/22/18 at 8:24 am to TigerFanInSouthland
It's because they took prayer and bullying out of school. Back in my day these nerds couldn't do this because they were too bruised up from getting bullied

The write up also cites the reasoning behind this from a study in the Psychological Sciences.
No, the write up cites a piece from The Atlantic, which cites the article in the journal Psychological Science.
That journal article was about "meaning in life" between poor and rich countries. It does say poorer nations are more religious, and more religious nations had lower suicide rates than richer nations. The study also showed support that more education lead to lower meaning in life. As did having fewer children.
I guess it could be argued that we need to be poor, dumb, and surrounded by children in order to find religion and to reduce suicide rates.
Though, the study did report that the USA is high in both meaning in life and GDP. So...seems like ole Ben Shapiro should have looked at the study he cited second-handedly.
(I briefly looked at the introduction, methods, and discussion sections of the article. My response may possibly misinterpret their findings.)
Edit to add: An important bit from the Methods section, is the different years of the data used. The religiosity and life meaning data were based on a 2007 Gallup poll. The suicide rates and other data were from like 2011. So, perhaps they miss something there like the 2008 recession.

-Take a bunch of kids whose hormones are raging
-Fill them full of prescription drugs to suppress their natural tendencies to be actual kids
-Add in 24/7 pressure of trying to impress friends, constantly looking at other people's lives, etc through social media
-Throw in the easiest point in history to live on this planet, with all your immediate needs taken care of, therefore you have nothing to do all day but think about mindless shite that you think is a big deal but actually isn't
Suicide city here we come

And it's only the good stuff in people's lives, most of the time. New "toys." Big vacations to exotic places.
People getting their dopamine fix by giving or getting "likes."

None of that is everywhere. Smartphones are.

When you think about it, depression is a privilege.

Like has been mentioned, a lot of this has to do with the proliferation of social media and the “Me, Me, Me” attitude that kids have these days, and parents feed into.
Kids’ self esteem/happiness is tied to how many likes they get on instagram, as opposed to things like personal achievement.

You can thank social media for that
Yup. Probably has a lot to do with an extended range for bullying and on top of that if kids were feeling down on themselves about their situation in life, they can now see all of their peers and how well they're doing at all times. It's probably stunting the development of kids somewhat.

A political science and law degree makes someone a psychologist nowadays?

No, but it probably makes him better at analyzing data than most. To expound on your point, if you shouldn’t opine on anything that isn’t your field of expertise then was it wrong for a bunch of non-slave owners and sellers to opine on the moral ineptitude of slavery in the 1800s? Is it wrong for a man to have an opinion that abortion is barbaric? I’m not an LSU football coach or player, should I never have an opinion on the football team?
Those types of arguments are not good arguments.

Life is meaningless and emptiness. It's whatever you want to do with it. Religion pushing hard to gain followers. Yeah, religion is what kids need. The pressures of looking good and having a lot of money to buy material things has nothing to do with it. Maybe we should start teaching our kids how to deal with adversity instead of bending over backwards to accommodate their bitch arse feelings. frick religion.

The message that life is not about looks, money, and material things is one of the primary themes of most religions

So, what’s to be done? First, we need to get off the weak sauce of “spirituality without religion.” Spirituality is an aimless search within for some sort of transcendental values that simply can’t be found within. Religion is about practice — it is about acting in moral and ethical ways because your Creator demands it. This doesn’t mean you have to join an organized religion. It does mean that human beings need individual meaning — a belief in their holiness and specialness as beings made in the image of God, rather than a cluster of meaningless cells wandering through a cold, empty universe. And it means that human beings need collective meaning as well: brotherhood in this journey. If we can’t supply those things to our children, it’s no wonder they’re in increasing levels of despair, no matter how many tennis lessons we buy them.
Annnnndd he turns it into a pulpit for Christianity.
