I'm still trying to figure out where they got the "51k died from a heart attack" number
if you add "cardiac arrest" and "heart failure" together and say those are all "heart attacks", you still only get 39k

What's difficult to parse here is that death certificates can have multiple things listed.
So what exactly is the article saying the CDC is counting as "cause of death"? Is it the immediate cause in the case of a heart attack, or is it listed as a sequential symptom, or is it listed as a contributing condition?
When breaking down the comorbidities, the CDC gets specific about it:
I believe this also means that anytime someone dies and COVID-19 is listed on their death certificate in any of the ways it can be, they're counted as a COVID death. That also means someone who actually died of COVID (Acute ARDS) who has a comorbidity of heart disease would show up as a statistic in one of the circulatory categories above. Someone can die and be counted in multiple categories.
