Once the shark stopped playing around it went in for a savage kill. It grabbed the guy around the shoulder and neck.

I have a feeling it’s just a matter of time the way shark attacks seem to be increasing

are they?

Not really.

This graph of unprovoked shark attacks in the world from 1960 through the present also shows the portion occurring in the United States for comparison.

The drop in recorded attacks in 1969 is a result of a loss of funding to support the ISAF, and hence less effort reporting and organizing of attacks (see the History of the International Shark Attack File). The apparent increase in attacks after 1987 is in part an artifact of the ISAF moving to the Florida Museum of Natural History, resulting in an increased scope of coverage and reporting of attacks. The apparent increase in attacks after 1993 is in part an artifact of a breakthrough in communication with Volusia County (FL) emergency responders and lifeguards, resulting in the reporting of a greater number of minor attacks that had previously gone unreported.

They also track provoked attacks both worldwide and in the US, but justifiably differentiate between the two.

2015 was the high water mark of recent times. 2020 is deceptively low due to the Covid response inexplicably closing beaches leading to fewer people in the water.

This is a pretty good resource. With some digging you can find each year's shark attack report with a thorough breakdown.

Who the eff films this? I am old and in my early forties, but it NEVER occurs me to turn on my phone to watch someone die, or be lamed.

Well in fairness, what did you want them to do? It’s
Not Like they could swim out and help him.
If authorities want to know what happened, this guy has it on film. Look for the positive, Liz.

That was a damn big tiger shark.

We caught one that we guess was 15' long a few years ago. It's impossible to imagine how big they can be without seeing it that close. The one that got this poor chap was probably 10' long.

Two women were killed a few days apart by sharks in that same area in 2022.

Some Aussie diver dude was also caught on video getting chomped recently. I mean literally chomped. He was CLEARLY severed below the waist. In the video you can see his torso bobbing in the water with what looks like his sacrum or lower spine dangling out. Shark then came back and took the rest of him, and at least two onlookers sat there and filmed the whole damn thing.

It was a reported "total consumption." There wasn't anything left of the dude. Horrible way to go.

I grew up next to a Great Lake and I don't really need anything bigger than that. Ocean? frick it.

That shark rag dolled that dude. Have seen thousands in my lifetime. I use to night surf all the time in my early 20's. Can't even fathom the thought of doing it now.

That frontal view of that shark jaw is that of a Mako shark.

Makos easily have the most fearsome set of dentures of them all, imo.

They are the Great White's speedy little brother and luckily they prefer swordfish and marlins over human beings.

He was a swimmer training for some triathlon. Near Sydney. Literally had lower half bitten off then the shark took the rest.

Seeing those great whites breach going for seals makes me never want to swim in Australia or South Africa. This was a big tiger - rough video to see. Red Sea seems to also have a lot of white tips (unsure about bulls) the other one of the sharks that are truly dangerous.

I think Mako. Also has the pointy snout of Makos.

I certainly could be wrong.
