Hate to tell them, but suicide is a mortal sin and as there is no chance for absolution through confession, it is the teaching of the Church that the gates of Heaven are barred.
Frankly, I am amazed they even allow suicides to have Catholic funerals.
So what about all of the fatties that die a slow death by eating fast food everyday. Are the gates of heaven closed for them too?

Lol at all of these "Catholics" approving of what this preist did. How anyone can still follow this religion is beyond me. If only this family believed in a different religion their son would be in heaven now. But being they chose Catholicism their son is banished to hell. Take note everyone, if you are Catholic and have mental illness, please switch your religion asap so you have a spot in heaven. What a joke!

If they intentionally do it to end their life? Then yeah. The gates are barred. But you and I both know that very few people actually do that. It's like smoking. They know there's a chance their habit will kill them but they aren't intentionally trying to die.

Actually, very few approve of what he did, but most are defending the doctrinal basis for what he supposedly said.
There's a difference.

Jesus never said one god damned thing about the government redistributing wealth.

What'd they expect a Catholic priest to say?

It's not just Catholicism, you dolt, it's all of Christianity. The vast majority of Christians believe suicide to be a one way ticket to Hell. This has been taught since the days of the Apostles. Islam and Judaism teach the exact same thing.

You're such an angry little prick. Go ahead and extrapolate your current political views to the Bible all you want. Slant "socialism" and Jesus all you want. IDGAF, fricknut.

I’m not dishonest. You’re just cold. I’ve dealt with a suicide. We had a Catholic burial and everything. Not one time did the preist say he could be denied heaven. He gave a great ceremony and showed absolute reverance. He didn’t go up there and shout fire and brimstone. If you can’t understand why it’s not appropriate to say things like that, you need to evaluate yourself.
I’m not cold. I’m just dealing in realities. I attended a wake for a family member who killed himself and another human being in the process within the past few years, a really really low point in our family’s history, and at no time would I expect a devout religious leader to get in front of us and tell us a bunch of niceties while ignoring the murder and suicide. It’s hard on the living. I know it all too well, as that was my best friend and brother growing up. We shared a whole bunch of life together, and he took his own and another person’s life, and that fact just couldn’t be ignored. I found it best that there were just random friends and relatives speaking, giving more positive and happy stories of his life. I would never however expect a priest to get in front of believers and not point it out. It’s his job to do so as the leader of his flock. If you don’t want that, and I get that you don’t want to hear that at that moment in time, so just don’t call a priest.

Many parts of the Bible condemn it
Start with Matthew 22:39

Suicide is a grave sin. That priest was doing his job the right way.
That literally one if the dumbest things I’ve ever read. His JOB was to provide comfort for the family.
What he did would be like going to someone suffering from cancer and telling them “You do know your going to die, right?”

The Bible isn't the sole rule of faith for Christians. We, as Catholics, rely on Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterium for doctrinal questions. But if you really want a simple answer, look no further than the Book of Exodus. God gives Moses the Ten Commandments and one of those commandments demands that we not kill. Suicide is the act of self-murder. And not all suicide is the result of a mental disorder or some kind of chemical imbalance in the brain.

The one main difference is, of course, that Christians believe in repentance of sin is a one way ticket into Heaven.
I tend to believe that most people are good and try to do good things. They rarely say things that they think will upset others simply for the sake of upsetting him. He probably was under the impression that saying whatever the original line was of "I don't know if he had enough time to repent to get into Heaven" as a dual "suicide is bad" and "look, no one really can say how long it takes to repent for an action, and it is theoretically possible that he could have realized the error of his ways and, sans a priest, been admitted into Heaven despite the conventional teaching that this is a typically 'damnable' offense, but I'll throw this is there to give hope"

That's because they view martyrdom and suicide differently.
