Acapulco’s janky Mexican weather station only made it to 43 mph before it broke. I was hoping to see some reports from it.

That’s an interesting video if you want to examine T-shirt fabrics.

What I find interesting is that they still have power. You can hear the wind in the video. Here if a butterfly farts we lose electricity.

Isn’t it pretty mountainous to the west of town? From the pictures it almost looks like something you’d see on the Mediterranean with the city built on hills and cliffs

The whole area is pretty mountainous surrounding the city. Land and mudslides will definitely be the issue I’d think. That, and when I was there I literally saw houses made of mud and cardboard. It’s not going to be good at all.

We need to find out the manufacturer of the anemometers the Japanese used a few weeks ago to get that 200+ mph reading. Our network of weather stations and anemometers isn't exactly world class at the moment, with most not capable of handling a bird fart.

It ain't just the models. Usually with storms that take off like this you have at least a handful of mets (or hobbyists and chasers) that catch it beforehand and start banging the drum. That didn't really happen this time. It is a combination of location, late season complacency, and just way too much model casting. It should definitely have some folks reevaluating how they forecast going forward.

It is one thing to miss it when you're a chaser looking to add to your storm experience total. It is a whole other deal when your job is serving the public directly.

Satellite run of that thing going from TS to Cat 5 to dissipated in 24 hours is impressive

A lot like Patricia

It will probably diminish in intensity just as fast as it slams into the mountains.

If this was heading to say Miami instead of Acapulco, I am assuming some meteorologists would have picked up on the potential for this kind of strengthening even though it did not show up on models? I just want to know how much I should pucker up if I have a tropical storm coming my way. I usually just hope I get a day off when a tropical storm is coming close.

Unreal. Whoever heard of a cyclone strengthening from a 70 mph tropical storm to a 165 mph monster behemoth... in only 14 hrs!

There's no fun in Acapulco today

Yes.

Somebody would have noticed the models were missing the organization and the upper levels looked dangerous. Put the two together, and the potential was there.
