re: Casino to patron: Sorry ma‘am, you didn’t win $43M—there was a slot machine “malfunction”

if I am her legal counsel, I play the race card hard....my client is a black woman...your casino thought she could be bought off with a steak dinner...say that in front of a jury a time or two.
So, instead of making the plaintiff, an African-America woman, whole, you decided to offer a steak dinner in hopes of ensuring that your profits remained intact - yes or no please.
I loathe playing the race card, but that would be exactly the right play here. This is ridiculous on the part of the casino. Absolutely ridiculous.

Yeah I'd get an attorney then settle

I wonder what the precedent is on this sort of thing of casinos claiming malfunction. It seems like I have heard about this sort of thing happening before, but I don't remember the outcome.
It's really not uncommon. The machine in question here had a max payout of $6.5k so it clearly was a malfunction if it tried to give her $43M. Everyone of these cases I've looked at it's the same thing: the top prize is relatively low, the machine malfunctions, and tries to pay the person an obscene amount of money. A good compromise (well not for the "winner") would be to give the person the max amount they could've won. I'm sure she'll get something in her suit, but I'd bet it will be below 6-figures.

No clue why they'd refuse to pay it out
I'd pay it just to shut her up and be done with it, but casinos are not required to pay out on malfunctions.
This was a decent explanation I saw in comments.
quote:
There are no $42M jackpots on any machine. Those multimillion "progressive" jackpots with the big LED signs are not paid out by the casino, so they want you to win them.
Also, this didn't even happen while she was playing. When she tried to cash out her remaining $2 of credits, the screen just showed the wrong value of how much it was printing the voucher for. You can see that in the picture.
EDIT- This is getting some attention so let me add some more info from my time in the casino biz. The casino reports to the state how much each machine is mathematically expected to pay out, as a % of total credits played. Every 6 months, they report to the state how much each machine has paid out. If there is a bigger than 2% discrepancy between the "theoretical" and "actual" payouts, the machine is physically inspected.
Casinos do not need to screw you. The games are mathematically in their favor. Their entire goal is to get you into the casino as often as possible and to get you to play as long as possible. They are happy to pay you any legitimate winnings, because it encourages you and anyone who sees you to come back and play more.

Nice find. So she technically wasn't even playing the game. You would think people would check for all the facts of the story these days, but i guess not everyone learns.

That changes a lot actually. They will settle but it will be for a tiny fraction of 42mill

I'm betting she gets a fat settlement...prob around $1M.
No she won't. The steak dinner is all she'll get.

They won't give her a thing other than some type of comp.

If she plays that slot machine and doesn't win anything there would've never been a "malfunction"

Looks like an overflow error. 2^32 is 4,294,967,276.
I would not award the winnings if I were presiding over the case, because to do so is to basically demand game the game developers to program it flawlessly, and obviously that is an impossible precedent in today's world of electronics.
As a side note, if that slot took a dollar every 10 seconds on average, even neglecting any payouts, it would take over 1300 years to break even from such a high payout. That alone should tell you the machine is clearly not intended for that kind of winnings.

How so? Plenty of people quickly respond to the OP. I've seen 15+ page threads where some of the last comments are directed to posts from the first page and already beaten to death.
I'm not saying that other people don't do it. I am not even saying that you are wrong for doing it. I don't understand why other people do it either. I suppose I can see where someone would do it to re-spark conversation or debate on the topic. Anyway, there is nothing wrong with it.

It's not even like I posted something obscure. This case was posted a while back, and I was just responding to it after reading the OP and based on what I remembered. I then went back and skimmed the article.
I gotcha. I didn't want to come across as a dick, even though I suppose I knew good and well that my statement would come across as dick-ish. That doesn't make too much sense either.

Its like going to an ATM, pressing the $60 cash option and getting $400 in cash by machine malfunction. Are you entitled to that $400?
I'd be keeping that $400, that's for damn sure

And you would be committing a crime. The fact that she wasn't even technically playing the game when this $43 million number came up is all you need to know that it was clearly not in the normal intended progression of the machine's functioning.

Ehh if it's my checking account I'm going to assume it came from my money. Would like to see someone prosecute that

the story was from 2016, so any update???

The New York State Gaming Commission has sided with the Resorts World Casino, ruling the there was "clearly a display malfunction" and that the machine's maximum payout was programmed for $6,500. The slot machine was fixed and operating the following day.
Clearly, this a case of negligent programming. Give that lady her monies!

They would take the money from your account. The bank has cameras...and monitors all transactions at ATMs. I think there's no way you get away without paying.
