I am glad I have a 10 year old car that I bought with cash 5 years ago and owe nothing on. Yes its nearing 150,000 miles but it sure as hell beats being locked into a car loan

shite, I'd rather restore an older vehicle with reliable parts than pay that

Gimme an old Scout in decent condition, and I'll put a Chevy 350 with a decent automatic transmission (some derivative of a late 90s Chevy truck) in it and new ac/heater and call it a day... and I'll probably have a better vehicle, more reliable, and looks cool as hell

I was raised if you can't affor it outright, you cant afford it period... I sure as hell won't be paying a car note... I have zero debt and I plan to keep it that way

And guess what, they have zero reason to bring the price down.

People will still run out and pay $1000/month just to have a “look at me” vehicle.

As long as people keep acting like “well that’s just what nice stuff cost” and keep buying, prices are gonna stay that way

So the point of the article is not actually about you or your situation.

No I live in a modest home that I could comfortably afford with a 2.75% interest rate.

Got a 2018 F150 STX I bought in 2019 from CarMax for about $27k. It had about 25k miles on it at the time. It now has a little over 140k, and knock on wood, it’s been a good vehicle.

Had to bring it into the service department at my local Ford dealership about 18 months ago for them to change the stick for the windshield wipers, as they wouldn’t shut off. Before the service guy called to give me the price on replacement, I had received two phone calls and two emails from their used department wanting to buy it and “Let us put you in a new truck!”.

F—- that. Fix what I brought it in for, because I’m perfectly happy right now with no car note.

Well no shite. Truck prices, specifically, have increased criminally in 5 years. A 2020 Chevy Trail Boss was around $45K brand new. A 2025 Trail Boss is $65K. Damn near 50% increase in 5 years.

Any decent optioned 2025 mid size truck starts at $45K.

And the sad part is they are charging that much because people are dumb enough to pay it.

A friend of mine almost bought a 2025 special edition Silverado. He wasn’t going to put anything down and his payments were going to be $1300+. He can afford it no problem. He said thankfully he took a few days to think about it and decided against it.

I paid off my truck and have no desire to buy a new one. Still get compliments on my baby when I'm out and about.

If your monthly note is less than $750 you live in a 15 sq foot house roughly, basically a few shoe boxes put together .

My last car payment was a LOT more than that, but then again I only had one payment and then I was done so there's that.

I've never had a car loan and no that's not a flex but rather my choice to drive what I could afford at the time

I want to say the interest rate on my current car is 1.99%. Why would I give someone my money now when I could give it to them later when it’s worth significantly less? And for further context, I bought it at the end of 2021 (not planned; issues with previous car that would cost more than was justified), and considering the record inflation we had over the last few years, I’d say I did ok on that choice

3bed, 2 bath & It’s less than $1,000.

I know it’s hard to believe that some people are just fine living modestly in what they can comfortably afford. Also, saved up for about 5 years for a down payment. Not everyone is neck high in debt.

Of course not everyone but the overwhelming majority of people are in major debt.
