Honda Civic with a manual transmission.
Simple, doesn’t go very fast, and incredibly reliable.

Kia Forte - can get a new one ~$20k with a 100k warranty on it. It'll last through college and into their first job. Just make sure to keep up with the service agreements through Kia or they'll void it.

We found an off lease Audi A4 with 37k miles for $15k. Was a steal.
Base model and not Quattro.
Has been a great car.

I don't know what state you're in but be sitting down when you call your insurance agent to add him to your policy.

Just know......the vehicle will be on the receiving end of many, many dents and scratches.

My 2010 still has a chain no belt

Civic or Corolla. Chances are they will wreck it before long…..
Also in Louisiana. Figure $300/mo for girls and $350/mo for boys for car insurance……

Mine just turned 15 and he will be getting my Tacoma...which, coincidentally, is the first vehicle he's ever ridden in as it was the one I drove him home from the hospital in after he was born.

Camru is a really good choice. The Accords are also good but the V6s have had a lot of engine mount issues. It's not a show-stopper, just annoying. There are other options as well.
I'll post an image from Consumer Reports for their best-used cars for teens article from May of this year.
FYI my daughter still drives a 2012 Camry that we bought for her in HS (2016-2018 time frame, I can't remember exactly when). She is about to finish Grad School and the car still runs great, no major work has been done, just tires and routine maintenance.
ETA: My son drives a 2018 Mazda 3 Touring and it's been pretty solid so far but he has only had it for about a year now.

Get yourself a car and lend it to the kid. They can earn the right to "have a car".

I don’t get the need to “buy my 16 year old a car as soon as they get their license”. Let them borrow one of your older cars when they need it, maybe buy yourself a new one.

All the one in my range look to have about 100-150k miles.
Personally, would not phase me one bit with a Toyota or Honda if well maintained with proof of service records. But as others have stated if it has a timing belt (vs timing chain) I would want proof of when the belt was last replaced as that is a $1K maintenance repair. Good service shops place that information under the hood on a sticker in a very visible location.
