I don't disagree that the prices of new vehicles are out of control.

That being said, you know there is an intermediate level between driving a 260k mile POS worth $800 and buying a brand new Tahoe for $80k, right?

You're right - but I think a secondary point I was trying to get at is - is the car market really this bad - are cars literally sitting in lots and are dealerships not able to move inventory? Because as someone who will probably get a newer car in the next few years I'd like to not get ripped off and buy the dip.

My car is relatively new, so I do not know if this is a fact, but the few car lots I pass during my normal drive have full lots, but there overflow lots are bare. Tells me they are not having problems moving inventory, but the sales may not be as great for them as they were a few years ago.

When I was in the market, the salesman told me (wasn't a pitch, was legit happening) that they were selling the cars before they were delivered. I had to put a deposit down on a car (deposit was 100% refundable) sight unseen; and when I went to test drive it, he had already moved 3 of the 10 cars that came in that day. 6 of the 10 had deposits on them

Nice, I have not owned an american brand since the early 2000s, generally stick to japanacars. I'd have to go on a research binge in order to confidently buy a GMC.

Why don’t you just go buy some used civic that actually works for like 20k.

I wouldn’t drive without AC in the south if I made good money.

You could buy a 20k civic drive it for 5 years and it will still bring 15k.

I make around $500k/year and still drive my old Tundra (225,000 miles). I’d like to get a 3/4 ton but just think it’s absolutely ridiculous how much they think they’re worth on the lot.

You can still get a nice car for not much more than $30k. I realize that isn't pocket change, but as long as you stay away from "big" vehicles, trucks and the like, most things are reasonable.

I just got out of the car sales jungle after almost 10 years. Find dealers that are reputable and don't jack people around. They really do exist. I was lucky enough to work for 2 of them for my whole career and I never once went home feeling like a crook.

And yet people still buy them by the bucketful. The dealer in Montana I worked for sold over a thousand of them a year.
