How many Canucks do you think have ever stepped foot in the Deep South? The majority of them (including 99% of foreigners) go to three places in the United States: New York City, Los Angeles or Orlando.

Birmingham had a world class medical center. Huntsville has a huge NASA facility. That alone puts it ahead of most countries.
