I live an extremely sedentary life, and I just did 40. My arms/chest were nearing the point of muscle fatigue, and I'm out of breath, but I did it. Yay me.

Yeah... I either do it in 20 sets of 2 or 40 sets of 1

My father was in WWII and he did 50 push-ups every morning until about a month before he died at age 87. It was really pretty cool to watch as he got older. Old man always had some biceps too.
I could until I had surgery. But I’ll get back to it.
Well that's inspiration to keep doing them. I used to do 50, in one pass in the morning. I just do the 25 now, but I do at least 75 every night now as well. I go as far as I can go in one and then finish up with another 25 after a little break. Certainly not enough to build muscle, but it maintains.

Most people here are missing the pint of pushups.
For one, it’s using your own weight, so if you are at a good, healthy weight, the odds are with you when it comes to heart diesease.
Also, that many push-ups measures your aerobic muscle ability. Stuff like, how fast can your heart pump oxygen to your body.
I think it makes a lot of sense. Although, I would imagine that it would taper off at some point. For someone in their 70’s, I’d bet 20-30 is a good indicator.

If you can’t, on command, knock out 50-75 pushups then you’re failing your family as a man

I’m 57, and when I started four years ago I could barely do 10. Now, 50 is the norm, usually three sets, but can push 75 as a one off limit. Also walk about 10 miles a day. Started this due to borderline diabetes, and dropped 30 pounds. Holding steady, it can be done. Oh, also cut back on sugar intake.

Up until June of last year I was still doing 60 pushups and 60 situps a day.

Easy. But because of other factors I am also at great risk of heart disease

I do 35 every morning right before jumping in the shower.
And I’m out of shape.

I'm 52 and consider myself to be in good shape. I regularly do 3 sets of 80 push-ups, 3 sets of 20 pull ups and 3 sets of curls, usually every other day. I also run 3 miles 2-3 times a week. Have been doing this for years.
But I still make old man noises when I stand up.

I think they mean real pushups, not those half assed shite that 90% of people call a push-up.
That includes fully extending your arms when you come up and keeping the push-up set continuous as a single motion.

If I only want to pass the minimum on my APFT, sure.
I never shoot for the minimum.
