I agree that that would have to be more defined, but if it is legitimately 6 months of sacrifice for $30-50k more per year, that is a trade off I would make any day of the week. That isn’t an insubstantial amount of money.

To each his own. Spending time with my young kids is worth at least 10x more than that to me. You’d seriously forego spending time with your young kids for an extra ~2k a month after taxes? Jesus Christ.

If it turns into a misdirection, yes, that would suck, but it seems as if OP has done his homework and has applied for this position before, so I would assume he knows the situation better than us.

You may be willing to take that bet that this is the 1 in 10000 position where that actually happens, but I wouldn’t. Odds are it’s not 6 months of no life for an extra 30-50k, but rather 10-12 months of no life for an extra 15-25k.

I get that. I have a 2 year old and our time together is important.

But, to give her a better life, I would sacrifice 6 months.

Again, the contract would have to be defined though.

Yea, I don’t disagree that that would not make it worth it.

There are a lot of unknown factors here.

A present father sounds a helluva lot better than an extra couple grand per month net.

Depends on the life impact.

I think a lot of us have a skewed view because we have positions that pull in a substantial pay amount.

$45k is the median US income.

For a vast majority of US citizens, increasing your pay by that much is life changing.

And, on a different point, people seem to dismiss that the OP has such an issue with his current job that it causes medical problems.

Maybe just going ahead with his own business is the right thing to do.

I am too cautious to take that leap without a backup plan.

No

And to the question of how much pushing back the business 6 more months would impact it, that’s unacceptable to me because the fall is going to be our busiest time of the year. I also don’t want to go public with it, then slow down dramatically because there is nearly zero competition in Louisiana for it, and once I go public with it and start advertising, getting out in the community, etc., I’m sure there will be others who want to try starting their own version. It’s a very unique business that has proven to be quite successful in other areas but Louisiana has almost no competition as of now. I can’t start it then put it off for months while others get ideas. Once I get out there with it, I have to go balls to the wall and keep up with its evolution to remain at the top.

Then, you are answering your own question there.

If this is the case, you shouldn’t take the job.

Seems pretty cut and dry.

Yes, I’m not working weekends unless I’m building something for ME, not someone else. It feels like I’m at a turning point career-wise.

There you go.

Good luck with the new venture. Hope it goes very well.

You only got so much time. That's an easy decision. Stick with what you got

Let’s say you’ve been making $35k a year and the new job you would make $65k, then take the job.

If you’re making $150k now and new job would get you to $180k, then no way I’d give up my weekends and work 12hr days for that. Wouldn’t even entertain it

I’ll have to re-read post again. Read it quickly. I’ve just seen employees be told they are removing bonus pay (for example), but salary increase will make up for it. It did not. At all. I guess it depends on the work sector. Im sure there are many lateral career moves be made at a lower start but valid chance for more.

I skipped a few pages but - can you bring on someone to help launch the new business while you keep/take a FT job? Even if just an hourly employee, college kid etc., sounds like that would benefit you while you build it and ensure the new biz is a success. If you have such a solid idea, taking out a SBA loan to help pay for labor could be considered.

In general my advice is to take the leap, but not knowing enough about your whole situation I think its hard for anyone on this board to give you solid advice.

Taking another insurance sales job where you aren't in charge seems like a bad idea. You're believing a promise of commission potential that isn't guaranteed, hence why you'll have to work long hours and weekends. I've been in the industry for 13 years and have never known someone who needs to pull 12 hour days and weekends to be successful.

The comparison should be, if I worked the same schedule I work now, would I make more money and/or be happier?

Stick to your current job and go full bore into this new opportunity with your wife together. Worldly ambition, especially money, tends to blind us from what truly matters and often times we don't realize it until it's too late.

It’s in the insurance industry but it’s with one of the most premier brokers I’ve had my eye on for a long time. Very reputable, very genuine, and known for doing the right thing for the customer instead of for themselves.

So, not State Farm.

State Farm isn't a broker. Could be accentria, goose head, etc

Been there done that, 15 years later realized it wasn't worth 50K a year. You can't buy the memories and time back with any amount of money.

Honestly sounds like you're just going to be compensated at the same rate for the extra time you'd have to put in to earn that extra money.

Jobs come and go, and they'll be there if for some reason your own business doesn't work out.

Stay where you're at and keep working on your own business. Run lean and save up so you have enough runway to make the jump. Yeah it's going to suck, but damn near all startups do after the setup phase. When you can leave, you're leaving on your own terms with all the freedoms that come with it.
