.

I think BR gets more hate then it deserves, except for the traffic problems. But then again, i grew up in opelousas so I guess my perspective is skewed

ETA of the problems I see most apparently.. white flight is probably one of the largest factors. If people stayed in the city and fought for their neighborhoods and schools rather than move to the burbs, wed be better off. Perhaps that's just naivety talking.

Losing Slick Trax was the watershed moment for the city.

I blame it on Katrina. BR hasn't been the same. My solution, give free guns and hard core drugs to all thugs. They will kill each other off at a more acceptable rapid pace - then we can all live happily ever after!

The inability to get abortions has perpetuated thug culture and being raised in single parent homes.

I didn't mean fight to keep them white - I mean fight to keep them nice. I understand that school zoning really fricks things up, though.

Pockets of the city aren't that bad. A bit of fun and good eating can still be had.

it would seem, looking at it from the outside and not living there, THANK GOD, that too many racists got elected into positions of power, and now they are engaged in systematically firing the people who knew what they were doing, to replace them with people who dont know what they were doing, and these decissions are being made based purely on your race and your politics, rather then having any qualifications or literally having any idea how to actually do the job they get hired to do.

that pretty much sums it up

pretty much mirrors what nagin did in new orleans and turned it into a steaming shite hole as well

The pocket is in your vehicle, eating a burger while sitting on I-10......

Me and a few hundred thousand others relocated there in a very short period around Katrina landfall. I was there late 80s and early 90s and that Baton Rouge was gone by mid-September 2005.

Baton Rouge is currently on a path to look like Jackson, Mississippi within the next 5 years. In the immediate future, I see no hope of reversing that course.
Unfortunately in this case...It WILL be ready in time.

It was 08/30/2005 to be exact. It was over literally the day after Katrina.

By blaming these disenfranchised people and politicians for the cities problems aren't you just blaming others for the issues at hand, rather than helping fix them?

In that 20 year time frame:
drinking age was raised to 21
Violent crime plummeted, at least until last year, but became less geographically isolated.
Both infill and sprawl development exploded
LSU and Alcohol Board went Nazi on underage drinking and tailgating
downtown developed into a nice entertainment zone and a wonderful place to live and work
Government Street gentrified
BR got 2 breweries and a distillery
BR added a ton of new local restaurants
no more hockey
Jimmy Swaggart got caught banging hookers
new baseball stadium and expansions of football stadium
new mall completed the destruction of the old mall
Perkins Rowe and Juban Crossing
Sewer improvements
Water Campus and Nicholson Gateway project
The Caterie Burned Down
Silver Moon closed
Chelsea's closed
gas prices rise and collapse
IBM

However, in the last year:
deadly police shooting of a civilian which led to protests by outside agitators
assassination attempt on local police
massive biblical flood that wiped out the suburbs
election of a SJW race-pimp who posed as a moderate in the primary
massive spike in homicides
enforcement of open container laws on 3rd street
complete incompetence in the mayor's office causing multiple projects to die on the vine

Section 8 spreading to working class neighborhoods. Causing them to flee.

It only takes 1.

If Baton Rouge AND the state could get a handle, a plan and quick forward movement on a very aggressive road and highway improvement plan this city could be ok.

That would go a long way, but there'd still be a lot more to fix.
