Can I still cash an 18 month old check?

It's a refund from a Hospital. The check doesn't say anything about only being good for so long, but I thought they could pass these debts on to the state at some point to get their books right.

Deposit that shite at the ATM And see what happens. Can't hurt

no expiration? cash away... don't see why you couldn't. even if it expired, they would just re-issue

It's probably stale, but you should be able to get it reissued if you call the hospital. Don't think that it would have been escheated yet. Might depend on the hospital's policy. Just give them a call and see what's up.

No such thing unless there is an exp date

You’ve already lost money due to inflation.

Is this a not so subtle "I don't even need to cash checks that are sent to me" thread?

If they close the account there is.
Most checks state a expiration typically 180 days. I would call the administrator and verify or just deposit and see if it clears.

You’re clear to cash that check unless or an expiration date like another poster said. When my FIL died my wife found a bunch of checks dating back to the early 90’s from his company he never cashed and my wife had no issues depositing the checks. This was in 2014

Check and see if it's in unclaimed property with the state. You'll get interest.

It really comes down to fungibility.

My guess is that the hospitals bank would honor it if you deposited it.
If you wanted to be nice, you could call the hospitals bookkeeping dept to make sure it won’t cause some kind of reconciliation issue, but aside from that, I’d say deposit it and see what happens.

I think banks won't take checks after something like 6 months usually.
The hospital may or may not re-write you a check willingly. They probably wrote it off as a good guy.

I cashed a pay check for a summer camp that I worked at least a year prior to me finding it in my desk. It’s probably still good.

Don't be stupid!
No bank is going to take a check from an 18 month old baby!

Most banks have a 90-day policy on checks. It's called "stale dating."

You're gonna put the hospital out of business. It's like that episode of Seinfeld where Jerry cashed all of his Nana's old birthday checks and put her in debt.
