I know, for a time, the Italians were seen as less than desirable. They were equated with the blacks, and were often treated a lot worse than them.

Louis, the guy who owns Itlalian Dist. on Tchop and Royal Street. He was arrested a few years ago for that prostitution sting in the Quarter. I forget his last name, maybe Marcotte, but I could be wrong.

I don’t have any scoop on the NO mafia. But all my life my mom would make homemade spaghetti sauce that was really good. One day she told me the story behind the recipe.
She worked at a bank with the SIL of Carlos (I’m pretty sure it was the SIL- could have been another close family member). Poor lady used to come in to work wearing oversized dark shades, long sleeves, etc. The whole stereotypical battered wife appearance.
The SIL was very quiet and stuck to herself but she and mom got to be not exactly friends but friendly co-workers. Suspicious looking people would pay her visits at the bank and she would tell mom to make sure she stayed away from them- that they weren’t the sort of people my mom wanted to get involved with. Mom said she was always curious about what business they were transacting at the bank. But not enough to pry.
Anyway, she gave mom the sauce recipe she got from Carlos’s mom. So all my life growing up I ate mob spaghetti sauce. Or so the story goes, anyway. Hell, for all I know the lady made up the recipe in the spot and laughed at my mom all the way home. I don’t think so, though. It was good sauce. And she was definitely a Marcello by marriage.
