I use to think yes.. but almost always one person will fall for the other and it can be awkward or wind up bad.
Friend, sure.. but close friend.. it's just not ideal at all.

They can have a friend of the opposite sex sure, the real question is can someone truly trust a SO who has a close friend of the opposite sex.
I think that's a harder question, and the real question. I'd say no honestly.

quote:Strictly responding to the OP’s question, the answer is yes.
In your opinion, can someone in a committed relationship have a close friendship with a single person of the opposite sex?
But the implicit subtext of “would the male in this scenario want to pole the female?” is a litmus test on that male’s alpha-ness.
I have Schrüte-like alpha-ness so my answer is I have attractive females as friends and associates but as they are attractive females I don’t take them off the target of opportunity roster.
That doesn’t mean I act upon it, only it is noted.
From a woman’s perspective, as Oscar Wilde correctly noted (admittedly a pole smoker but correct in this observation) “Women have minds like Swiss Cheese.”
That makes their motives and behaviors incongruent with alpha male logic.
God sardonically laughs at this fricked-up danse macabre He deigns to make us do.

Yes.
I’m still friends with my ex-gf from middle school and she’s had multiple bfs since then and we’ve been cool.
I’m friends with two other smoking hot chicks who don’t show any signs of them being attracted to me and it’s cool.
Then there’s chicks I’m friends with who my gf knows I’m not attracted to so that’s cool as well.
The only problem I’ve ever had was with a girl I was close friends with all throughout high school. We flirted a ton but never dated. After HS she dated a guy for a few years and married him. Before then we would text everyday, go to see each other, hang out, call each other, etc, but once that wedding happened he shut her down. I’m okay with it and I understand him being insecure but it sucks losing a long-time friend like that.
ETA: and on the flip side it’s mostly about trust. If I can’t trust a girl to have friendships then why am I in a relationship? I’m fine with a girl having guy friends if I get to know them and evaluate them myself. If a girl keeps you away from her friends or likewise with a guy keeping his gf/wife away from his female friends shite is gonna pop off.

Does your gf know that you’re gay? No straight guy has that many single girl friends without banging or at least wanting to bang them.

the only guys I’ve seen with that many close friends of the opposite sex were gay. It’s not possible IMO. There is something going on with having that many friends of the opposite sex. You want to make your gf jealous, you’re insecure and want it for appearance, self-esteem boost, mommy issues, or you really want to bang them and not being honest.

Well idk what to tell you then. As I said, two are smoke shows that could get it. The rest are either like a sister to me or just a good friend but not my type. I don’t see how that’s gay. One has a boyfriend right now so I guess that doesn’t get added to the count, so it’s like 6 single girls I know and am friends with.

The woman needs to get over her issues with her mother and cultivate deep trust of women.
Having a confidant of opposite sex is about the oedipal. Some people are always competing with the ghost of parent of same sex.

Cdawg, keep in mind that 'he' (rmnldr) has posed as a female here and other places for some length of time.
But it was just for laughs..

Probably more of a flamboyant, high-pitched giggle.
