for home use to record and family=y traveling D3500 more then good for it
we travel a lot and often to Europe and still love that camera

For the vast majority of people, the camera on an iPhone X series phone or the Samsung Galaxy 9+ is all that they need.

Wife has a pixel 2xl and all the ladies want her camera used in pics over the iPhones and Galaxys.

I have a Nikon d7000 for shooting action of my kids' games, but I don't use it for anything else anymore. The phone works much better for taking other action since the big DSLR is a bit suggestive and pushy to the ladies. Better to let the action happen and get it on wife's phone

I dont care what you take the pictures with but here's a little heads up for you; nobody wants to see the pics of your kid.

I'd buy a Pixel phone if the phone itself was better.

But I gotta tell you when it comes to a combo of ease of use/quality/portability, I always grab the Fujifilm X100F. It’s a delight and in the $1200 range. Not the camera to build a system around (lens is fixed), but a near perfect EDC camera. For kids/family, think most about which camera you’re going to want to lug around with you all day.

I have the X100T, not the F, but I agree that the X100 is a great series and is perfect for traveling/day trips.

I do want to get a DSLR eventually, but haven't pulled the trigger. My BIL has the Canon 7D and I've been very impressed with the shots he has been able to get with it.

Again - thank you everyone for all the help. I went to a camera shop yesterday afternoon to get the feel of a mirrorless and loved it. Much, much lighter. Almost certain that I will get a mirrorless over DSLR.

I think I have made up mind to get a crop sensor instead of a full frame to start. I'll spend what I save on better glass (and starting a college fund..).

Still haven't decided on the camera, or even the company. I am assuming it will be either Sony or Fuji. I haven't done as much research on Fuji as I have Sony. I like the Sony a6000/6500.

Fuji glass is superior. it's also more of a traditional mechanical feel than Sony which is as one person described it "an electronic device that doubles as a camera"

Fuji also does a great job updating software instead of releasing new versions every year

But you'll get great pics with either.

I read an article about the XT-2 that said it is different camera than it was when it was first released because of the updates Fuji does. I really like that.

Right. Instead of releasing a camera a year like Nikon and Sony, Fuji updates software. I've got the XH-1 which is basically an xt-2 with body stabilization. Most Fuji lenses are stabilized though.

XH-1 also comes with battery grip that carries 2 more batteries. Gives you over 900 shots

I have a Nikon D3400. Got it at costco a few years ago and was around ~$400-500.

Came with a a standard 18-55mm lens and a 70-300mm.

Functionally it's been a great camera to use for the "novice" user, at least for what I use it for.

I like that you can connect to your phone and transmit the photos as you take them to your phone. It makes it easy to send them via text message, upload them to social media etc.

With all of that said, sometimes nothing can beat the phone in your pocket. Much more convenient, don't have to worry about lugging it around when you're just trying to have fun with the family etc.

Lastly, highly recommend doing professional photos(newborn, miletstones, etc). They are going to do a much better job than whatever you're gonna conjure up for your portraits. Whether that's posing your kids and you, editing the photos etc.

I want a DSLR and have been focusing on the Nikon D Series, but I am not against buying a Canon.

I would also look at Sony (I'm a Canon guy for cameras, but always a fan of Sony products, too) - and strictly speaking DSLR is probably going away in favor of MILC (Mirrorless Interchangeable Lens Camera). Sony has been a leader in that regard.

Before you commit to a lens ecosystem, study up on the new wave of mirrorless cameras. There are more choices now and it can be overwhelming. Good luck.

Great pictures. I know that my wife has already paid for a first year milestone package - birth, new born, three month, six months, one year. My hope with buying the camera is that my wife will feel that I can take adequate photos with what we have and not feel like we need "professional" photos every quarter. Might be a pipe dream..

Ace - I should update the OP, I have decided on buying mirrorless. Still haven't decided on the company, but if I had to buy a camera today it would probably be the Sony a6500.

Very overwhelming just deciding on a camera, much less the lens.

If you’re going mirrorless I can’t recommend this camera more:

Sony RX100 Mark VII

Well under your budget but with literally unrivaled AF.
