Hey guys, my wife and I are expecting our first child soon and we are looking to buy a camera to document our growing family. We are both photography novices and neither of us have owned a camera before. However, I think photography will be something that I will enjoy and I am looking to buy a camera that I can grow into.

I have done some research, but I am having trouble narrowing down a particular camera and lens. I want a DSLR and have been focusing on the Nikon D Series, but I am not against buying a Canon. My budget is ~$2,500 for the camera and lens. I am not against buying used.

Any comments/recommendations on a particular body and lens would be greatly appreciated. Also, any recommendations for good blogs/websites/videos to check out to learn more about photography is also appreciated.

Thanks!

Edit #1 - Scratch the second paragraph. After reading the suggestions in this thread, online and visiting a camera store I have decided against getting a DSLR and will be buying a mirrorless.

1. Get you a rebel and put it on full auto.
OR
2. Pay a little more and get a SONY mirrorless. Much smaller and a hell of a camera.

Get the best camera phone you can find.

Carrying and using a separate camera gets old after a year or so.

If you are not opposed to buying a used DSLR, then I would look at Canon refurbs. You can buy them directly from Canon and they come with a warranty. That goes for lenses and flashes as well. You can get a refurb Canon EOS R with lense for a few $$$ more than your budget.

For the vast majority of people, the camera on an iPhone X series phone or the Samsung Galaxy 9+ is all that they need.

If you are wanting to spend that much go mirrorless. I shoot Sony a7iii and love it. Get camera without kit lens and then get something like tamron 28-75mm and build from there. You'll love the eye auto focus on sony especially for kid shots.

I think you would be better off with a phone that has a good camera. They produce good pictures in today’s tech world. That way, you won’t have to worry about lugging around another device that you have to take home, plug in and upload files. Everything can be done from a phone.

What about mirrorless?

Fujifilm XT-3 is as good as you'll get without spending 5 grand. Their lenses are all top notch too.

It's also a great video camera.

The XT-30 has the same guts, just a less robust camera body. You can get that and the XF18-55 lens (absolute monster) for less than $1300. LINK

XT-3 plus lens is around $1900. LINK

Spend another 400 on the 35mm F2 Prime. Extremely fast. LINK

Mirrorless is the wave of the future, Fuji and Sony are the leaders in that industry. Sony for their full frame, Fuji for the crop sensors. The XT-3 is the best camera on the market for under 2k.

I am not against mirrorless. Most of the blogs/posts I had read talked mainly of DSLR so that's where my focus has been. Will spend some time researching mirrorless. Thanks!

Smaller, quieter, less bulky.

XT-3 review.

Mirrorless is the way to go, Fuji is kind of the APS-C line. Sony rules full frame, but that's some serious money.

There's still limitations on phones, low light and action (inside shooting toddler photos) are a real challenge for most phone cams.

Good mirrorless have wide tracking autofocus which allows you do a wide variety of things that phones cannot do.

Phone cameras have comes leaps and bounds, and the first time he misses a major milestone because he ran off to grab his camera, he’s going to regret his life choices.

This.

Cameras have gotten so nice these days though that even entry level DSLR's like the nikon 3500 take amazing photos.

I have real cameras but I use my phone when needed. It's not like they're mutually exclusive.

Professionally I shoot Nikon. Not much differentiating Nikon and Canon DSLR offerings - just a question of which system you want to invest (or are invested) in.

Also shoot Sony mirrorless - amazing system that is fairly future-proof. Bodies are tiny in comparison.

But I gotta tell you when it comes to a combo of ease of use/quality/portability, I always grab the Fujifilm X100F. It’s a delight and in the $1200 range. Not the camera to build a system around (lens is fixed), but a near perfect EDC camera. For kids/family, think most about which camera you’re going to want to lug around with you all day.

Highly recommend you consider something with a fully articulated LCD - kids are all about low angle shots, and those are a necessity.

Any questions, hit me up.
