NY Post

quote:
Matthew Hubbard, a math professor at Laney College in Oakland, asked Phuc Bui Diem Nguyen on the second day of her online class to change her name in an email obtained by CNN.
quote:
Nguyen — who told the network that the trigonometry professor had not asked how to pronounce her name – informed him that his request felt “discriminatory” and warned that she’d file a Title X complaint if he didn’t use her given name.
But he responded that pronouncing her name in English sounds like “F— Boy.”

It is pronounced Fook Buoy.

Isn’t the pronunciation of phuc more like fyuck? I know that’s kinda hard to say for someone not used to speaking Vietnamese but either way just go with Phuc Bui and have fun with it lol.

It’s one of those things where he is not wrong. But he didn’t need to be the one to say it.

Right? He also might not want to tell her:

“If I lived in Vietnam and my name in your language sounded like Eat a D—, I would change it to avoid embarrassment,”

I knew I guy named Phat Ho. he would try to correct people to say "fot" but wasn't worth the trouble. You could tell he was in for a rough life until he settles on a nickname.
