Eta, deep water brine disposal in Australia is creating dead zones

If they damned up some of their non navigable rivers and utilized evaporation control measures on the reservoirs this wouldn’t be that big of an issue.

They could evaporate the brine and sell the salt to states that use it on the roads during winter, there are advancements being made in the brine battery tech, they could set up a chlor/alkali plant next to the desal plant.. there are plenty of things to do with the brine, they may not be profitable but they can at least make use of it while limiting what goes back into the ocean. I’m sure someone smarter than me could figure it out, but it seems most options are better than a population running out of potable water.

Now that depends on who you ask. The sierra club certainly disagrees with you.

There are towns here that have run out of water. But they are small, mostly Latino, and no one cares. Not a peep on the news

That should take care of about 50% of the outtake, Tony Chachere can buy the rest. Deal done!

Do you know why the Sahara isn’t a bustling metropolis?

If you don’t have the resources you need to sustain your town, you don’t have a town.

How are all the homeless surviving If there is no water? Can we ship all the homeless there since they never seem to have an issue?

People weren’t meant to live in desserts. We need water and lots of it. And irrigation isn’t always the best answer. I was listening to someone describe what happened to the Fertile Crescent and they theorized/stated that improper irrigation practices lead to salt/mineral buildup over time and ultimately rendered the ground infertile and barren.

Think idiocracy watering the plants wi the brawndo, the thirst mutilator.

The homeless survive on change alone. No need for food or water.

Desalination for dummys. There is a little water in the Pacific ocean.

They can’t do it, they’d need to use nuclear energy or burn coal to run the plants and that would be like, bad for the environment.

Is evaporation that large of a factor? What does “evaporation controls” look like? I have no idea about this stuff but it interest me.

Lots of comments in this thread remind me of the shite people say after hurricanes.

“…really cleaned up the place.”
“…shouldn’t live near the coast.”
“…t’was the Lord’s vengeance.”

To you shitposters, remember this the next time you’re complaining about some yank’s hot take. You’re no better than they are.

That's interesting and similar to what is happening to the California Delta. That Delta where the Sacramento and San Joaquin River meets and forms a delta going to the SF Bay.

My wife's uncle owns a vacation house there ad it is a nice place but they are starting to have issues with salt incursion. About 20 million people get some drinking water and a shite ton of big agri gets water from that Delta.

Some people want to take more of the water. Then some want to leve the river as is but it's not sustainable. Some stupid fish migration as well.

It's going to be a big fight in the future.

They make these floating plastic balls (think similar to an old McDonalds ball pit but much sturdier) that will effectively cover the surface of the water.

Hexprotect Aqua

Evaporation is a huge deal in arid climates. Even in LA evaporation can empty ponds and other stagnant bodies not being refilled.

Freshwater availability and allocation is going to lead to some significantly nasty conflicts world wide. Egypt vs Ethiopia, South Africa and their neighbors, India versus Pakistan.

It’s going to be bad

I can jump 3 homeless on a skateboard, maybe 4. But don’t ask me to jump any more. I won’t do it.

Exactly. Almonds take up 10% of the state's water.

I like almonds as much as anyone but we don't need them at that price.
