There are thieves Hmong us.

That's a helluva payout for the scumbags at the top. Makes you wonder whether the people at the refinery had at least an inkling of what was going on.

Three members of a California family pleaded guilty Monday to conspiracy for their role in a ring that shipped $600 million worth of stolen catalytic converters from California to New Jersey.

Brothers Tou Sue Vang, 32, and Andrew Vang, 28, along with their mother, Monica Moua, 58, were part of "a national network of thieves, dealers, and processors" who provided the stolen auto anti-smog devices to a metal refinery for more than $600 million.

The three Sacramento family members pleaded guilty to conspiring to transport the devices in return for more than $38 million.

Hard to imagine 3 people did that much damage cost wise. I honestly doubt that figure

is that 600million in the price of the scrapped converter or cost to victims to get their shite fixed? It reads like its just the value of the scrap. Which is honestly hard to believe. And if its just the scrap value then the replacement costs must be in the many many billions.

I remember reading about this when they charged them. There was no way they could defend how they were doing it. They probably agreed to testify against a lot of others involved for a somewhat lesser sentence. Wonder what they agreed to in sentencing...

The average value of metals per converter may be $150 so that's 4 million cars, which would be 1.3% of the cars in the US with a replacement value of maybe $3 billion so maybe it does make sense.

Is there any other way to make these Converters that doesn't involve expensive materials? How can we make this less attractive to thieves?

This article has more info. Apparently this DG auto out of New Jersey had multiple rings set up around the country.

The Hmong family in Sacramento was getting around $1,300 per intact Prius converter they bought from local thieves.

I'd love to know how much this cost insurance companies. I think it was like $5-7k to repair my Dad's vehicle.
