STOCKTON — The father of a soldier who was killed last weekend in Afghanistan was disappointed and hurt after airline passengers booed him and his family as they flew to meet his son’s remains.
Stewart Perry, an ex-Marine who lives in Stockton, said the ordeal left him feeling disrespected.
“It was really disgusting on the passengers’ part,” he said Friday.
His son, Sgt. John Perry, was one of two killed in an explosion at a United States airbase on Nov. 12. He was honored at a memorial service in Lodi on Thursday and will be buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Stewart Perry said he, his wife, Kathy, and daughter were flying on an American Airlines flight from Sacramento on Monday to Philadelphia, with a quick transfer in Phoenix. From Philadelphia, they traveled to Dover Air Force Base in Delaware to receive his son’s remains.
For unknown reasons, Perry said, the flight to Phoenix was 45 minutes late. The crew feared the delay might cause the Perrys miss their connecting flight.
So, when the plane landed in Phoenix, the captain made an announcement for all passengers to remain seated and to let a “special military family” exit the aircraft first, Perry said.
Several passengers in first class began to boo and complain, Perry said.
“Some people were saying ‘This is just baloney,’ and ‘I paid for first-class for this?
Some people need to learn some respect and also receive an old fashioned arse whooping.
RIP Sergeant

Just a little taste of how it was in the Vietnam era.

Put these sumbitches on the front line and let them earn their right to fly first class. Bunch of pussies.
Thanks to Sgt. Perry and all of those brave men and women who fight for our freedom.

Thank you for your service. Thoughts and prayers with the family.
Disgraceful, and the people on the plane should be ashamed. I really hope this isn't real

Most of the people in this thread are probably the same people who would complain if someone else got a privilege over them for an unknown reason.

Ex-Marine, passengers booing on trip to get dead sons remains, did not frick some people up. Does not compute.

In a related story, but not nearly the same unfortunate circumstances this poor family endured was on a flight I had when I was flying to Japan. Our plane to a connecting point at LAX was extremely late and the plane to Tokyo was waiting for us. We had seats in the back of the inbound 767 from the ATL. An announcement was made to please let the passengers that are flying to Tokyo get off the plane first.
So, what happened when the plane got to the gate? Same thing as usual: everyone jumped up immediately and it took us the usual 15 minutes to get out of the back of the plane.

additional quotes from the father
quote:
To hear the reaction of the flight being delayed because of a Gold Star family and the first class cabin booing, that was really upsetting, and it made us cry some more,” he said. Perry said his son’s death also underscores why the American flag is sacred for service members, not just a symbol for protest.
quote:
“It’s not for protest - it’s for the death of the people that are saving us. That’s what it’s for,” he said. He also called out recent presidential campaign rhetoric, including President-elect Donald Trump’s remarks about the Khan family. “One example would be Donald Trump speaking badly about a Gold Star family, who I now am, and it really bothers me, but it also bothers me that people don’t want to talk about the terrorism that killed my kid,” he said.

I'm sure none of the boo birds knew they going to retrieve the remains of their son.
Terrible these parents had to go through this.
Everyone needs to be more patient and empathetic.

Celebrities. That's pretty much it. The rest of us are getting the platinum upgrade.

I'd have held first class even longer.

The passengers were apparently unaware why he was on that flight.
Still disrespectful though.
