I would gladly pay my way out of that in a hurry

When asked if he was effectively changing a judge’s order, DeRosier said, “I think a judge assigns people to us to handle their probation as we see fit. We can let them off if we want to.”
Essentially the kind of person who thinks he is untouchable especially when they say shite like this

The gift card exchange and the District Attorney’s Community Assistance Foundation is a point of pride for DeRosier.
“This program has benefited people, it's benefited a lot of worthwhile organizations,” said DeRosier, who stands by how the program has been managed over the years. “Every dime that has been collected has been accounted for. I’m going to keep doing it.”
DeRosier questions why, after all these years, the programs are facing scrutiny.

I don’t think the judge sentencing him for fraud / theft / malfeasance in office will like that much.

Guys like Derosier quit practicing law when they get elected. After that, it’s all a path to enrich themselves and their friends/family.

Wanted to bump this for the day crew. Hopefully kplc picks this up and it starts getting more coverage locally

That's super fricked up and is blatant corruption. That DA needs to be in cuffs.

Hell, I'd pay for some gift cards to get out of some community service. I bet had made a nice little bonus from that.
Id pay $100 per hour to get out of it

Cosmo, not the point, many would pay to get out of it happily.
Point is there was no accounting of these gift cards. Hundreds of thousands in monetary value in gift cards none the less.
That is illegal.
Also his quote about he can enforce the sentence however he feels and can let them off if he wants is against the law too imo. It's contempt of court.
This needs to take his arse down.

How long have you been practicing law?

The only difference between the cops and criminals in Calcasieu parish is the badge. I avoid that area of the state. Crooked cops are everywhere.

I haven't. Not the point nor is it that complicated. Pretty damn cut and dry. The DA doesn't have carte blanche to change the sentence ordered.
Could he change a life sentence to 5 years? No and it's the same damn thing. It is total disregard for the judges orders because he thinks he is untouchable. Hell read what the judge they interviewed said.
If he had the ability to enforce the sentence as he sees fit, then why go to a judge for plea bargains?
This shite is corruption at it's core.

We should set up a system where welfare recipients sign up to have wealthy people pay them to do their community service for them. Seems like a win/win. Everyone enters the contract at their own will and the welfare recipients may feel better about actually working and helping the community out for their welfare

While I personally agree this looks like a shite sandwich. The fake news media is who is reporting on this. They make up shite all the time and give us the narrative they want and we eat it like good little children. I don't believe the DA did any thing with the gift cards that is inappropriate like give them to friends, etc. He failed to monitor it and document it properly which is in itself completely inappropriate. But I believe it was out of ignorance/arrogance and not out of maliciousness. I don't know if he has the authority to modify these misdemeanor sentences. I do know the court normally designates someone to handle community service and how that is carried out is usually up to the designee, so I don't have an issue with the gift card process if he can show it benefits the community more than picking up trash or whatever is the normal standard. But the gift card process MUST be documented.

We wouldn't know nor woukd he know if they were Stolen, there was zero accountability.
As far as the community service thing, yes they are given the ability to carry it out and where, but it is still supposed to be some form of community service. You can't change the judges orders as you please.
And the arrogance he shows is astounding.
As far as fake news media....wtf are you talking about? This is a local outlet, that interviewed the DA who readily admitted he had the program, he would continue the program and that there was zero accountability of what was coming in and out and to who. It literally can not be fake as they admitted it and think they did nothing wrong.
Guess what, the DA is wrong on this one.

The one judge they interviewed said he was just finding out about this.
i'll clarify something about this. the regular judges don't deal with misdemeanor cases directly anymore. there is a magistrate/commissioner (don't know if they've decided on an official name) now who handles all MISD matters. the only way that probation can be through the DAs office is a misdemeanor probation. so none of the judges likely have any idea this is going on b/c they're just removed from it
i'm saying this in defense of the judges, not to criticize them
