This song is not about black people, good or bad, IN ANY WAY. It is not even about American chattel slavery. It's about the fricking War of 1812 - you know? The one the guy was watching when he wrote the thing, while in custody of the Royal Navy?

I don't really see the problem with it. I also think the principle should have explained the situation to them. Instead of canceling the entire song.

I just read the lyrics. First of all, I had no idea it was that long. But isn't our National Anthem only the one verse?
Reading and understanding Olde English is difficult to me but it looks to me that he was sympathizing with the slaves and hirlings for not having a safe refuge from the British bombs.
Am I reading the verse the wrong way?

I said this a few weeks ago in another thread about the Lee Circle beads. Everyone needs to just relax and stop acting like every little thing is the greatest affront to their existence to ever happen.
I honestly feel like there isn't even an argument about this to be had. To even debate it gives it more credit than its worth. It's a factual retelling of an event whose language is manipulated for artist purposes. It's really more disappointing than infuriating.

I always interpreted that line to be saying that we (Americans) were "hirelings and slaves" to the British crown.
