Buying a radar detector for a truck

My nephew just got a Mitsubishi Triton and he would like me to buy him a radar detector for it. Now, of course, I have done the research myself reading and annotating several scholarly articles about the best types, but I have not found any one brand that is overall regarded as the best. What type of radar detector should I get and where should I buy it?

Why enable a younger kid to make stupid decisions?

Do cops still use radar? I always see them on the side of the road behind their open drivers side door shooting laser in a tactical stance.

Usually, you can detect the radar gun pretty easily because it comes attached to bright flashing blue lights.

The hits I get on my Escort are probably 100 - 1 radar over laser.

It's more of a Lidar system than actual laser and therefore emits RF energy that can be counterdetected

i had a few and found all they did was make me speed more with false sense of security.
often store motion sensing doors can set them off, plus in most cases by the time it goes off you are within visual sight line of the radar gun so its 50/50 he gets you or the car next to you.
bottom line is, save your money, they dont work as good as people think they do at giving you time to slow down.
but if you want to waste money on a "gadget toy" that gives you a false sense of security have fun, but you will still get a ticket with them unless they get the guy right in front or behind you, in which case the radar detector isnt the reason you escaped getting one

I've had an escort redline for years. Great detector. For its great range (a good mile or two), it does not yield that many false positives. I've heard good things about Valentine as well, but never owned one.
