Sounds like a great argument for telling him no to the radar detector and allowing him to pay a speeding fine. If he ends up in a tree because he can speed without consequence your point doesn't really hold.

I have a Uniden LRD950. If you do a little research, you'll find it rated as high as the Valentine and Escort, but it can be found cheaper. It was still in the $400 range a couple years ago and has been replaced with a newer model, but I found it at one point for $168 and bit the bullet. Has been pretty darned good and money well spent.

Escort 9500I- I have owned it for years. It has saved me countless tickets. I love the GPS feature, if it detects a false signal, electric door at the airport for instance, I can store it and it will ignore it next time I pass there. One problem with it is the new rear cams in some cars set it off if you're close behind them.

I've had Valentine and Escort 9500ix in the past, friends have had the newer Escort Max 360 and whatnot, but the Uniden R3 is easily the best radar detector on the market right now.

Are you that guy in the left lane blocking us speeding people from getting where we need to be?

Don’t forget to include a references page with your work.

Nope. I can follow directions. I understand the rules of the road. Maybe you need to calm down. Or wake up 10 minutes earlier. You'll get there Dale. Promise.

i had a few and found all they did was make me speed more with false sense of security.

often store motion sensing doors can set them off, plus in most cases by the time it goes off you are within visual sight line of the radar gun so its 50/50 he gets you or the car next to you.

bottom line is, save your money, they dont work as good as people think they do at giving you time to slow down.

but if you want to waste money on a "gadget toy" that gives you a false sense of security have fun, but you will still get a ticket with them unless they get the guy right in front or behind you, in which case the radar detector isnt the reason you escaped getting one

Is your only experience with radar detectors cheap 80s radar detectors?

Lot's of bad info in this thread. The people who say just download Waze must not travel off the beaten path very often. Waze is crowdsourced so once you get on a road out in the middle of Landmass, you're not getting accurate information. Waze ain't gonna do shite for you.

If you really want the best then research on rdforum.org and go to YouTube and watch Vortex Radar's videos. I have a Valentine 1 and it's saved my arse many times. I can pick cops up from miles away. I would also recommend the Passport 360. It has the arrows like the Valentine but it also has GPS lockouts. I think the Escort Redline has the longest range but it's also the most expensive.

If you get a detector, hardwire it so you don't have the cord hanging down. Also, learn to use a rabbit and don't be the dumbass weaving in an out. Get out of the left lane! Also be aware the planes on the Basin don't use radar so look up when you are close to either end of the bridge. Be aware of Laser and Instant On Radar, they'll get you.

Around 5 years ago I spent around $500 on an Escort Passport 9500ix. Best money I’ve ever spent. If they use laser, you pretty much won’t know it until they got you, but in 5 years and a lot of travel in La., Texas, and the entire southeast, I’ve literally only been lasered around 4 or 5 times. It’s just not widely used. The overwhelming majority just use radar, and you’ll pick it up a half mile away regardless of which direction it’s in. And cops pretty much just drive around with their radar on all the time for some reason.

You’d be shocked at how many still just use radar. Almost all of them still do.

All of this is complete BS. A good radar detector will show you whether it is X, K, Ka band, or laser.

Motion sensing doors use X band, so you know to ignore it. Or you can set your detector to ignore it. Only a few old podunk rural towns still use X band. It’s extremely rare.

Likewise, if you pass the same signal in the same location multiple times, a good detector will store that location and ignore it in the future.

And a good detector picks up radar around 1/2 mile away. Your detector will alert you looooong before you can even find the cop car.
