Sell the debt to a shady character for 75 cents on the dollar.

It was the weekend. We deposited immediately through our app. Still pending though.
Could still take more time than waiting for Monday and going to their bank and get straight cash.
Eta....as said, never take a check. Not being able to cash it IMMEDIATELY at his bank would be my 1st clue this may not end well.

Why did you deposit the check? If you must accept a check, always, always cash immediately.

Do you even notice $3k in terms of your accounts and portfolio?
This makes no sense bc people with money notice that shite. They have money bc they manage their momey well.

May we know what type of item? Doesn't have to be too specific.
Is it something he could have already used?
I hope you get your money.
And yeah, definitely make him go cash his own checks first.

Lesson learned...don’t accept personal checks. Cash, cashiers check, or money order.
You can always go to your local DA’s office to file a report for a bogus check. I know in JP the DA’s office will send him a nice certified letter telling him he has until x date to make it right or he’ll be facing charges. That should get him to change his tune

Isnt writing a bad check a felony?
Posted on 3/3/20 at 7:31 am to Jon A thon
go to the police and file a complaint for theft by check.

For personal transactions I Always always cash the check at the issuing bank. Yes they hit you for up to $6, but it doesn't bounce. If the money is there you get it. If not you can deposit it in your bank and NSF them or deal with them direct.
If you just deposit it they have 48 hours to cancel.
On business side, I take on average 4-5 personal checks a day. In over ten years ive had ONE bounce.
Most older folks tight in money will ask me to hold it and I will.
I like checks. No 3.5% transaction fees.

You said a few things that tend to make me suggest you simply take it back and start over. "It's the principle of the matter" and "it bothers me to be taken advantage of" - had an attorney tell me once, if its "the principle" of the matter that bothers you, just forget it - not worth it. The second phrase probably fits into that category as well.
Check out the item, I don't think you said what it was, and be certain its still in the same condition. For example, if its a horse, count the legs, if its still 4, then ok.
That being said, I would take it back and begin again. You don't sound poor, not worth the hassle. Live and learn.

Stopping payment on a check does not equal writing a bad check.
To the OP: Get the item back and move on.

So the money is in my account, but Chase said that it'd be another day before they can 100% confirm that his bank isn't going to put a hold on it.
Originally, when it was a civil conversation, I told him I wasn't interested in taking a return since I had earmarked those funds for something else. He immediately got aggressive through texts. Like 5 in a row over 10 minutes culminating in him saying he stopped payment. I didn't want to respond until I had a chance to know where the money was. He then offers me 2 options. He's going to bring the bike back or I can pay him $600 dollars and he'll take care of selling the bike???? Plus my wife finds the bike for sale online for $1,100 more than I sold it to him. I have no issue just keeping the money and letting him deal with his bad decision (this is all because his wife is pissed at him because they just installed a pool too). Guy is shady as shite. If I do anything, it will be offering $2500 to cover the BS of dealing with him and also the risk of not knowing if he's legitimate.

Now my wife just wants me to take it back to not deal with it. I am against it on principle. Not going to give in to a piece of sh*t who cancels a check.
Which one do you have to live with?
