They will still do this, FYI. But the fingers are just not good, especially since they started using frozen chicken. Plus they can't seem to figure out how to change out the grease and/or overcook everything. Has just gone to shite across the board.
Our local Cane's is damn good, though.

Was going to say Golden Flake, but I don't think that's who you're thinking of either.
I think you're right. May not be what he's thinking of, but Golden Flake definitely sponsored LSU football in the 90s

Popeye's
When they were small they used to advertise about how big their pieces were and make fun of others that had "Little chicken". Their sides were big portions and everything was cheap.
Now they are expensive with small portions. Their chicken is absolutely tiny and the sides come in miniscule cups.
Also, their employees now are angry and mentally deficient. How do they constructively manage their IRA's?

Conversely, all Dairy Queens outside the state of Texas aren’t as good (yes I know it’s just fricking Dairy Queen). DQ was started in Illinois but has their own Texas business unit I guess you'd call it...steak finger baskets and Heath Bar blizzards just taste better in small town Texas.

Golden Flake it was (I think)
Actually it may not have been. I'm not sure. Looking at the GF logo i feel like the one I'm thinking of is different. Not sure though. I was a young buck when the brand was advertising a lot and this was pretty much beginning of memory for me.

There is an old Dairy Queen in I think Henderson, Texas that is great. Has that 40 year old flat top griddle that cooks great burgers. If I find one of those I'll stop. It if is the new incarnation I don't even look.

Nothing like a bag of Golden Flake BBQ chips and a Big Shot strawberry soda

Copelands was good back in the day.
But the combination of time and better options has lessened the appeal bigly.

Are there any that truly survive the expansion and still keep it together?

I've never understood the appeal of Five Guys. Never
I agree. Their burgers aren't particularly good and the fries are greasy. The restaurant itself is loud and crowded.
It's garbage food. I don't get the appeal. In and Out burger is better.
I also think Shake Shack was overrated and overpriced. Not bad....but overrated and overpriced.
