I have an interview in the morning for a sales job with a software company. The HR rep said “business casual” attire. Am I ok to wear slacks and a button down? Should I add a tie? Seems too hot for a sport coat.

Side note- she said that a beard is ok, so that makes me think the sport coat may be too much.

No tie and sport coat. You can always take the coat off and hang it from a chair. But if you walk in and all the bosses are wearing coats and you aren't you will look like the Jack Leg you are. Wear the coat.

Why wouldn’t a beard be okay? It’s sales, not working the H2S fields like a roughneck.

Button down, slacks, and add the tie. Doesn’t hurt.

Beard or no beard has zero to do with whatever you wear .. In the business world, it’s becoming more common to have a beard than not to have one- regardless of whether the attire is business casual , or three piece suit, or whatever.

A beard is fine provided you don't have a shitty white trash patchy beard.

Clean up your beard and wear a tie and jacket, IMO.

They are testing you. Overdress for it.

If she explicitly said this, wear a coat, slacks, and button down.

Always better to overdress than underdress.

Skinny rolled chinos, slim fit untuckit, cardigan, chucks. Bowtie if you feel like peacocking.

Tell those boomers it's 2019 and time for them to retire if they give you guff.
