That is very office-specific

Particularly in Austin. I'm in TA for a software company and a lot of our competitors are pretty laid back to the point that an untucked polo and jeans are fine.

I just tell people business casual and in parentheses tell them sport coat, button-down, slacks, no tie. You only get one chance at a first impression, better to be overdressed than under

I decided to go button down, slacks, dress shoes, and a sport coat. The interview went well! Thanks for the input everyone!

If you’re told business casual and you wear a suit, you are showing you can’t follow instruction. Also, some bosses don’t want to see a douchey suit wearing overbearing metrosexual. Some bosses like to see someone who dresses appropriate but is down to earth and can relate with him or her. You were told business casual, dress business casual.

This is really dated. Who cares about facial hair in the business world today? A lot of execs in my field have facial hair, it's not a "thing" anymore.

I agree. I had a full beard when I interviewed for my current job. My boss has a beard, as do several members of upper management. As long as you keep your beard neat and trimmed, I seriously doubt that it will be an issue.

I don’t get it. One week business casual is jacket no tie, the next week it’s a polo and khakis.

Business casual has never, ever been a polo and khakis. Idc what some goofy meme says.

ETA - plenty of offices allow it, but it's really just casual.

Slacks and button down - yes.
Tie - no.
Sports coat - yes, if you have one.
